I'm upgrading the database server from a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit OS tonight starting at 2 am, so there'll be a few 5 to 15 minute outages during the necessary reboots.

Hooray! Late-night geeks with nothing better to do will panic by the thousands!

Think I'll steer my investments into 'Depends' stock!

I'd be curious to know any real world measurable performance differences between the 32-bit and 64-bit OS.

fwiw in the last day or two I noticed firefox is slower on Fark than opera... we will see after the swap out if that still holds.

Anyone else have a problem with Firefox where it locks the computer up when you first start it up, around 1/3 of the time?

It's less about the performance and more about getting past the stupid memory limits (2 GB per process etc) that are inherent w/ 32 bit.

Ahhh. Righty. Makes sense.

I've just always wondered if in a heavy load scenario like Fark if you'd see improvement or detriment just from the 64 bit architecture.

We're still a 32-bit only shop, of course we have nothing close to the crazy activity Fark.com gets.

Actually I'm not sure what CPU our AS/400 has (because the OS/400 doesn't care what kind of CPU you have - amazing stuff, that).

Well good luck anyway, hope it's a short night!

OK, first step done, just took an hour instead of 15 mins. Slow serial console. Oh well. :)

There'll be another reboot later, but it's just a regular ol' reboot.

Famous last words an' all that.

I heard this will save tons of space, both in RAM and on disk. No need to upgrade to 64 bits, so it saves lots of money too.

Have you tried reinstalling windows? sometimes that fixes things...

Apps rebuilt, doing last reboot just to make sure everything will come up cold. No reason to think it won't...

Yep, all good. We're done. Goin to bed.
