I am pretty sure it was shows like Tosh.0 and Ridiculousness that ruined this by providing all the exposure.

Back in my day, if you wanted millions of people to see you get hit in the balls with a bottle rocket, you'd have to mail a videotape in an envelope with ten first-class US postage stamps to the people in the TV and pray they'd select your scrotal damage hilarity to beam to households nationwide.

I was going to say, when you're still in your 30's, stuff that happened 20 or 25 years ago seems like forever.

Youtube could have been an opportunity for outsiders to find an audience but it turns out that the best way to become successful at youtube is to begin with a bunch of money for equipment, production, and the free time with which to film.  So basically it's a playground for children with wealthy parents.

I'm guessing this article sounded better in the author's head when he pitched it to his editors. Personally, I think he could have made it a lot more interesting by taking the opposite approach and writing about how much more interesting YouTube has made the "filming yourself doing stupid stuff" genre. Now, not only can you can view channels like Fail Army and Fail Force One to see the typical mix of hilarity and insanity AFHV used to do, but you can search for specific sub-categories like skateboarding fails, tree cutting fails, and fishing fails.

I didn't make it past the headline's subtitle.

The problem with citing The Paul Brothers and that one Vlogger who fed toothpaste to a homeless man as people who've ruined the fun in filming yourself doing stupid stuff, is that they didn't necessarily get in trouble for filming just themselves doing stupid stuff.

Now if you don't mind me, I'm going to go wash down some tide pods with some antifreeze, and put it on YouTube.

There's some film editing/trickery going on i n that clip, along with some good acting by the boys.  Look at the pencil in the foreground shifting from right to left in sync with the bookcase.  I'd wager the kids weren't in the room when the shelving fell.

Well sure, but it's still fun.

The kid falls into some sort of hole - he sinks lower than older kids feet. The walls look like a high school play set.

Okay, kids, There was this guy named Bob Saget...

Before Videos on the Internet, we all had to tune in our tv's to one channel at the same time every night if we wanted to see funny video compilations, and unless you had an analog dvr that recorded on plastic tapes, you couldn't even watch it again!!! *spooky fingers*

/now passes for ages old history...

Subby, age old refers to the current age, known as the information age, informally. Ages old items exist from previous eras.

Nah.   You can still see the kid's legs when the bookcase is just a foot or two from falling on him, and there is various debris that would hit him even if he had been in a hole.    I don't think they'd risk injury.  The TV would be right over his head and it appears to have real weight to it.     It's two shots.  One with the kids doing their thing, and another of the bookcase falling over.  The footage of the bookcase overlaps the footage of the kids starting from right to left, which is what causes the pencil to shift in that unnatural way.  I found the original video and it still has that same shift.  The camera moved ever so slightly between the two shots.      OK, so I looked it up and it was part of some ad campaign in Germany.  That might  also explain the décor.
