Diet Coke is the best thing that company has going for it.

It's practically the de facto drink of American fatties at all you can drink fountains nationwide.

I'm off soda, so when the grocery store cashier offered me a free Diet Coke in the skinny can, I passed it along to my son, who will drink any kind of carbonated corn sryup swill.

He thought it tasted like ass.

"And that's why they gave it to you for free, son".

Well, it's the only zero-calorie option out there in a lot of places. Some of those fountains don't even have a water button. What else are they going to drink? I'm sure some folks would like more zero-calorie options.

/ the local McDonalds do offer Minute Maid light lemonade, which I always get in place of Diet Coke, because it actually isn't half bad.

Probably because there's no corn syrup in Diet Coke.

I don't drink it straight, except in a pinch, but I love Diet Coke for making Rum & Cokes. Nice and dry, and no sugar load, over and above what the rum gives you.

I'm one of those described-above fatties that drinks Diet Coke by default in restaurants, even though I much prefer Coke Zero at home or work.  The Freestyle machines FTW.

Every place has water at  the soda dispenser and most every place has unsweetened iced tea behind the counter.

The water button isn't always labeled, sometimes it's just a little white button next to one of the soda labels - but it's there.

I don't dig the way diet taste clashes with liquor (which is the only time I drink soda). The one exception was diet 7up which seems crisp enough to overcome it with vodka. Cupboard is always stocked with Coke Zero for mixing whiskies and rums

I like 'em both pretty well and they look designed to be put in mixed drinks

Been thinking about trying Zero with Bacardi, but I'm an old dog at this point and likely to be disappointed.

What good is it if it's not labeled?

Actually, I think the problem is that people pay for their drink and don't feel like they're getting any value if they just drink water. Water is free. If you get a soda instead at least you feel like you're getting something for your money. Yes, I know the syrup barely costs anything. That's not the point. It's a psychological thing, not logical.

Coke Zero Sugar is great.

Where as Coke Zero had about 2 seconds of Coke taste followed by 4 seconds of that "diet" aftertaste, Coke Zero Sugar has 4 seconds of Coke taste followed by 2 seconds of diet aftertaste.

Great improvement.

(Why anyone drinks Diet Coke is beyond me. It (a) doesn't taste ANYTHING remotely close to Coke and (b) tastes like ass.)

StubePT:(Why anyone drinks Diet Coke is beyond me. It (a) doesn't taste ANYTHING remotely close to Coke and (b) tastes like ass.)

It doesn't taste like Coca-Cola because it isn't supposed to taste like Coca-Cola.

In 1982, Coke was nervous about the success of Diet Pepsi, but was very keen to (A) not cannibalise their own product by introducing another one that competed for the same customers they already had, and (B) not damage their own product's brand reputation by introducing a sh*ttier version of it that would just make people think, "well, it's like Coke, but it sucks."

So they formulated a new drink that would taste not-too-horrible with the available flavourings, would be similar enough to Coke that they could use the "Coke" brand name, but would be different enough from Coke that they could market it as a distinct drink that tasted good in its own right. "Diet Coke: Just for the taste of it," as their launch slogan went.

Then it spent about twenty years without much serious competition for the zero-calorie market, which was enough time to build up a hyper-loyal generation or two of consumers. They drink it because they've developed a taste for it. But they're starting to die off, and younger consumers don't like Diet Coke, because they have better options and don't have decades of loyalty to the product. Hence TFA.

Improved more by the burn from the rum

My grocery store was selling individual cans for like 30 cents each, so I got one of each flavor out of curiosity. Each and every one of them was bad. The best of the lot was the cherry one, which was basically just Cherry Coke with pepper in it. Ugh gross. Good thing the cans were small.

I like the zesty blood orange the best.  The cherry is okay.  The ginger lime was too much ginger not enough lime.  Haven't tried the mango - that one scares me a little.

The mango is my least favorite - it's a little too sweet, and more like a generic tropical fruit flavor than a really mango flavor.  Reminded me of Fruit Stripe gum.
