Beethoven's symphonies would be a good life arc as well.  I'm not claiming any genius or connection to the guy, but you can hear the excitement and vigor of youth, the anger and sadness and joy of his frailty and loves, and all of the emotion as his life winds down and he accepts his fate as we all must.

A few I strongly associate with certain people, events, or periods of my life. Not all are on my short list of favorites, but all are songs I like fairly well. I took the liberty of invoking the "maybe a little more depending on your age" clause in the loose rules. And so, in no particular order:

Patti Smith, Till Victory
Donovan, Sunshine Superman
Medeski, Martin and Wood, Partido Alto
The Stranglers, Down in the Sewer
Frank Zappa, Camarillo Brillo
Wendy Carlos, Timesteps
Miles Davis, Spanish Key
David Bowie, Beauty and the Beast
Sonic Youth, My Friend Goo
Mahavishnu Orchestra, The Dance of Maya
Gong, Isle of Everywhere
Pink Floyd, A Saucerful of Secrets
Robert Palmer, Addicted to Love
North Mississippi Allstars, Rollin 'n Tumblin
