How do you fall into a dam?

How do you fall into a dam?

When my folks kept cattle and had a fish pond. They had 'dams' in the cattle field. Small things...basically in a overflow ditch...about 10 feet across and 1 foot wide concrete across a drainage ditch. They'd make a pool of reserved water for the cattle. So, sometimes there was a small pond of water on that side of the dam. When I was a kid I'd walk across them all the time on the way to school. A three year old falling into that 'holding pond' could easily drown.

Dogs PERIOD are the best dogs ever. I once sprained an ankle while playing with my Akita (RIP, buddy) and even though it wasn't serious he took charge of the situation and guarded me as if I were a child. Curved his body around me and went on sentry. I kept telling him to chill bit he wasn't having it. If even a tiny mouse had approached me he would have killed it.

A few years back, I had horrible burns on my legs. My late basset would lay near me and keep the kittens away. Once caught her trying to clean the burns (put the kibosh on that), and would follow me around constantly to ensure I made it. Even tugged me to get me into the wheelchair when I struggled to make it to the kitchen.

A friend once told me that dogs were put on this Earth to remind us of our mortality. He is wrong. Dogs were put here to teach us what unconditional love is.

Dogs are great, but we made them that way. Let's not go pretending they're saints.

Dad had one growing up.  Actual working cattle dog.

Toughest dog I ever saw.  Shot by a rancher once.  Bitten by rattle snakes twice.  Once was run over by a speeding tractor trailer.  Kicked by cattle and horses too many times to count.  She died at 14 years old in her bed next to the woodstove.  Maybe one of 3 times I ever saw my dad cry.

Pretty sure all dogs DO go to heaven, but Bear's gonna be running the joint.

Gentlemen of the jury: The best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it the most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog.

Gentlemen of the jury: A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies, and when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death.

Is empathy something you can breed in or out?  We've had 30,000 generations to breed ourselves into better creatures and yet, here we are. Unless you count the saints.

Naw. I've read too many stories like this and seen too many roughhousing dogs instinctively know to be gentle with children.

when I was a kid, we adopted a year old black lab that had been beaten constantly.  Kindest dog, just super skittish.  Our neighbors had a barn cat (I swear half cat, half mountain lion).  Moose (the cat) used to stalk the horses.
Moose also took my dog under his wing, and if any stray, or neighbors dog came around, Moose farked them up right quick, do a headbutt to my dog, then back to the pasture to play with the horses.

Oops, lost part of my comment...

Since dogs are pack animals, looking out for 'himself' means looking out for his pack. They don't have a selfish sense of 'self' like humans.

//fighting dogs, etc. might be a different animal.

It takes much more than that. I've seen some pretty awful owners provide just as much.

Anyway, since this is a doggo thread half way to memorial. RIP Rosie. It was not fair you got diabeetus. You were the best blue healer ever. You kicked that mink's ass. That's how cats work. Not dogs.
Well...in the video interview...they were searching for the child and at a top of hill. "When I got to the top he saw me and led me straight to her". In deep bush it would be hard to find a kid hunkered down in brambles.

Dog saw the Mom...went up to them and "TIMMYS STUCK IN A WELL" and led them to the sleeping kid.
