"Flickr has survived through thick-and-thin and is core to the entire fabric of the Internet,"

Yeah, no.

Why do these companies names themselves like a slang for gross stuff I allegedly leave on the floor of my office for the cleaning staff to deal with?

Flickr has always had a full featured free tier with tons of storage space. It makes it super easy to share photos with friends and family. It also makes it easy to license some of your work under the creative commons, so anyone can use it either completely freely or with some restrictions.

SmugMug is at least six bucks a month. It also makes it easy to share photos, but if you want to be able to control how they are displayed, they jack the price up to nine bucks a month.

Professional photographers who sell their work pay yet more depending on sales features (24 or 42 bucks a month), but they seem happy with what they get from SmugMug for that much money.

For amateurs who like to share their stuff without paying a monthly fee and license it under creative commons so everyone can use it freely, this seems like a step back.

Came here for this, leaving happily. This is what happens when you drink your own Kool-Aid.

Their e-mail server must have barfed, because I got a dozen e-mails from Flickr this morning advising of the sale.

Interesting part is that I don't have a Flickr account.

Flickr bean in the sack? Does that really work like magic?

I have thousands of pictures on Flickr, but no email message. Hmm.

When I took a lot more photos, I used Flickr a lot. I like their interface and it has a straightforward photo sorting and tagging process. It's too bad that Yahoo had no idea what to do with Flickr.

I have an account but it seems like Thosw got my email instead of me.

He probably has a smugmug account.  I have not gotten an email either.

Nope. Don't have that either. Only reason I might have gotten the email is because I have a legacy email account that was purchased by Yahoo.

I'm relieved it was Smugmug doing the purchase.  I've enjoyed their product for many years now after moving there after Google's Picassa shiatshow conversion to Google+.  Ultimately it's a service I'm willing to pay for.

My company rents the office next to smugmug and I have no idea how they have that much money.  They rent this hangar next door that is a private gym and the employees seem to just work out all day.  Plus they decided to claim all the good parking spots.  Harrumph.

I have a SmugMug account - no emails

It's that booger flicking app, right?

I have flickr and haven't received a single email about the sale.

My assessment. Their hamfisted conversion to "Oath" terms & agreements this week is just about the final nail in the coffin as far as I'm concerned.

Oath? Do they promise to keep smashing terrible companies together?

I had(have?) a flickr account I made way back shortly before Yahoo.  I never did anything with it before it got Yahoo'd, and I refused to make a Yahoo login for it.  So I've been unable to login for the past dozen years or so.

/Looks like it might still exist...
//...but still required Yahoo to login.

Less actual "flicking" and more petting and gradual application of pressure while stroking and orbiting I've found.

Flicking for the most part is right out.

I have SmuMug and haven't heard a peep from them. Perhaps it was microwaved.
