Perfect for those parents who want to not vaccinate their kids, the ones who want to keep their kids chained to beds, the ones conducting unorthodox "line breeding" experiments, etc.

I was on an academic team in College and there was an incredibly bright young lady on our team that could outplay damn near everyone we played against. It was embarrassing for them. (Not because she was female, but because she was just THAT good.)

Her only issue was that she had absolutely no social skills at all and was awkward as fark.

Once you gave her a bit of your time and try to understand her numerous idiosyncrasies, she was, well, had I not been engaged at the time I would have loved to date her.

Come to find out, she was raised in a homeschool environment run not by evangelicals, but by whatever the opposite of whatever evangelicals were.

How are they supposed to be indoctrinated with anti-gun propaganda and the latest climate alarmist theories if parents are allowed to teach them, instead?

And this is precisely why my kid is in public school.  She learns more here than she does at school, but kids need to be around other kids, because when they become adults they're going to be around other adults.  You've got to learn to mesh with the whole thing or you're going to be left out.

A mark of ignorance is to think you're smarter than all those schoolteachers. You then teach your kids what you think is important and launch them off into the world. Then you and your kids whine and complain that the world is strange and unaccepting of you because you were raised outside your own culture. Eventually the kids get into politics complaining that science is just opinions.

One of the greatest joys as a parent is sending your kids away for 7 hours a day and letting someone else deal with their insanity! And while I'm on the subject...seatbelts, being able to legally restrain your kids in a car, tip of the hat to that legal scholar! Lastly, ski lessons. Don't teach your brat to ski hand it off to some teenager that's had 9 hours of training

Well, I dropped out of high school because I hated it that much, so I'm biased, but I think given the way we "educate" homeschooling is not so bad. The results are uneven, but so are the public schools.

So yes, I support homeschooling, especially if there is some sort of regulation to check that it covers the basics. Actual schools are so crappy and oppressive that for most kids whose parents have the motivation to want to homeschool, it will lead to good results.

1.- Self-smarting posts is dumb
2.- You do realize that a lot of the "anti-gun propaganda" (which is nothing but suggest that you don't need an AR-15 to hunt game, or to cosplay military) is coming from public school, and many of them are survivors of school shootings?

2018-04-21 12:28:25 PM
Maybe it's because I hang with secular homeschoolers, but I know an awful lot of families in the South who homeschool in order to teach actual science and limit their kids' exposure to in-your-face proselytizing.

The government is compelled to provide public education available to everyone, but citizens shouldn't be forced to attend as long as they're able to pass competency tests for proper credentialing.

2018-04-21 12:30:11 PM
Homeschooler parents fall, 99% of the time, into one of two groups:

1) religious nutjobs
2) hippies

So it goes without saying that whatever they support is wrong.

/the other 1% are kids in families doing awesome things like sailing around the world or bicycling from Alaska to Chile or backpacking across the Pacific Northwest and gaining experience, as opposed to being denied it

Prediction: In another 15 years, we will no longer be even 25th in the international rankings of math and science. We won't even be on the list any more. Because we won't have anyone even able to take the tests.

Yeah, we'll be "literate" in that people can still read and write; but as far as comprehending what they read, or being able to apply it; not at all. The STEM disciplines, forget it. Even service jobs may be too much for people with zero social skills.

I dunno. At the college back home the homeschool associations were equally full of the college professors children and the religious groups and the ones in between. It was honestly neat to see such vastly different groups get together and do what they thought WS sbestfor the kiddos.

I hear you. And I'm not actually opposed to homeschooling.

Honestly? I think a computer programmed to drill children in basic math (say) could do a better job of it that most human teachers. It would be more patient, at least. If I were king every home with children in it would have a computer like that.

Problem is, a very large number of homeschoolers are motivated by either:

1. A desire to avoid having their children learn anything contrary to the parent's religious beliefs, or;
2. A desire to keep their children away from Those People, or;
3. Both.

Those motivated by 1., especially, are likely to consider government-owned and operated schools to be part of some conspiracy by the (((children of the devil))) and their catspaws in government to lead their children astray. They will resist any government involvement in their children's education, even if it's just setting very basic standards.

That seems to be the main focus of homeschooling reform at the moment.  The education and environment that homeschooling provides can be extremely inconsistent.  Society has an obligation to ensure that future workers are reasonably well-educated and well-adjusted.  A few checks to ensure that parents know what they're doing and that they aren't abusing their kids isn't much to ask.

I was public schooled, as was my wife. She got a degree in education so she's putting that to work. Were really well off in this HOA. Library and YMCA within a stones throw from the house and a ton of other homeschool families, so the kids aren't without play dates
