The privilege of almost dying. The passengers on that Southwest Airlines flight had 10 or 20 minutes before they'd find out if they survived. It's a unique opportunity to learn what really matters to you, i.e. who you are.

WTF is this column actually about?  Its starts by b*tching that Starbucks' apology isn't real, because its PR, then shifts into liberal moral superiority and then grinds its gears on some weird "near death" perspective where the columnist says... what, 'think about it'?

/dude, you skidded on some ice in our car with seat belts and air bags, you didn't bare knuckle fight a bear or stare down a gun barrel.  Chill out.
//and there's a certain level of irony about a columnist being all morally superior while accusing someone else of acting morally superior.
///so its just not possible that the CEO legit feels bad about the whole thing?  Starbucks has long made a point of hiring veterans and refugees and even pay partial college tuition for employees.

Personally I think Starbucks over-reacted a bit over an isolated incident.  Unless there was a pattern of stores discriminating against black people it would've made more sense to just mandate that the staff of that one particular store do some diversity training.

That being said, the stores are theirs to do with as they please, so if they wanted to shut them all down to have everyone do diversity training, that's their call.

I'm not a fan of their coffee or how much they charge for it so I'll continue to not go there unless it's the only option available.

The right wing scumbags I know all go to Starbucks, they just assume everyone else is there is a liberal. One girl once told me she loves wearing her Chris Kyle hat there because she can sense the liberals behind her seething. It's a hat with what looks like the Punisher skull on it, barely anyone would know what it was, no one would ever be triggered by it, and odds are the people behind her in line are dumbass privileged yuppies like her.

Some starbuck's employee somewhere might actually learn something from this diversity training and use it to improve their professional and personal life.  That alone makes the closures worth it, but entitled white people want their overpriced coffee right dammit now and can't bare the thought of not being waited on exactly when they want it.

/starbucks did me a solid a few years ago so now I'm a life long fan.

Starbuck's reaction was completely over-the-top. An exercise in optics rather than a proportionate response to a couple of min-wage idiots in one of their stores. Staff could have received the mandatory "sensitivity" training or whatever you want to call it without the media circus around it.

Being highly abundant and overpriced coffee that could easily lose market share, with an easily dispensable and replaceable workforce,

Starbucks had no choice but to immediately conclude that their own employee was 100% at fault and take drastic immediate action include facilitating employees immediate termination.

It may be that the manager was at fault to a degree, but the fact that these guys refused to leave private  property several times when requested speaks volumes as to what likely really happened here.

JARTASS.  Just another reason to avoid Starbucks

I had a Starbucks this morning, and I feel terrible about it. The local coffee shops make much better coffee, but Norwegians have not come around to the idea of iced coffee yet, and sometimes I just want something cold in the morning.

I am, however, a commie pinko libby-lib type, so I have that part down.

Their PR squads got on it immediately. It was "reprehensible," said the CEO in a "public letter" and video. That covers Rule 1 and 2: get "out in front of it" and have your top person do it. My Rule 1 and only: if you want to look authentic, then be authentic, don't employ transparent PR exercises.

It's important that Starbucks finds the best response for their employees and customers, not one that's authentic. This guy is thinking "I want to see an authentic response to an alleged crime from a company I despise" in what appears to be a serious manner.

No it wasn't over the top, and no, staff couldn't have received the training without the media circus.

If they hadn't made a big social media hullaballoo about fixing the error, they would have had to deal with a boycott by agitated customers.

This is the world we live in now.

Also: surveillance cameras show the 9/11 call was made two minutes after the guys entered.

The friend arrived as the guys were being escorted out under arrest, several minutes later.

I know plenty of white people, myself included, who have managed to spend two minutes in a coffeeshop waiting for a friend before ordering without the cops being called on me.

I'm not against the apology or the half-day training session on "implicit bias" that they're holding - probably involving even more well-paid experts - "with input from groups including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People." (Though that's unreassuring: As Michael Che said, "First of all, NAACP, stop calling us 'colored people.' We picked a color a long time ago - it's 'black', OK?")

Concern is duly noted.

THIS  I honestly like the company for the most part (recent issues with race at individual stores aside, they seem to at least try to be a good corporate citizen) but Starbucks coffee is terrible.  Any coffee that you need to add crap like sugar and whipped cream to, just to make it marginally drinkable is just wrong.

I think what conservatives and other corporations hate  is that it shows their reactions to same events as the piss-poor nonpologies they are.

2018-04-20 05:46:00 AM
Starbucks is already crap coffee. They roast their coffee at a higher temperature (called scorching) to kill off all the local nuances in coffee flavors. Those that love the "starbucks" flavor are tasting the roast and not the brew.

As far as going to Starbucks for free wi-fi, I don't need your free wi-fi. It's probably insecure unless you use a VPN anyway.
