Don't rush to bash Trump simply because you let your political opinions color your worldview.

Human trafficking is a giant global problem. Backpage and Craigslist have undergone changes - often forced- because people turn a blind eye to the problem.

In other words, don't be a putz, subby.

I have to agree with you.
The global population was nothing like it is today back in the 17-1800s, and before that.
Graphing it out, I would agree that trafficing is worse today than back then because of the raw numbers alone.

2018-04-19 05:10:52 PM
Yeah, it's still a pretty farking serious problem.  Really.  Like bigly.  This is just a stopped clock moment.

I thought Jared was going to solve this.

2018-04-19 05:16:38 PM
It was only 3/5 of the problem it is today.

Is human trafficking bad.  It is horrible, horrible.

That said,  the slave trade, beginning in the very early 16th century brought something like 10 million live slaves to the new world.   The untold millions that died before they were brought to the New World should also be included, but the numbers are hard to tell, though some believe that as many died as made it to the New World.

Looking at the world population estimates of 1700, 600,000,000 a quick extrapolation would put that figure at 100,000,000 in today's numbers.   The Atlantic Slave trade does not include the other human trafficking/slavery that existed elsewhere in the world then as it does now.

The numbers above are just me tinkering, not authoritative by any means.

2018-04-19 05:27:33 PM
There were no cars back then, so yeah, traffic is worse now.

If you see something that looks like a star
And it's shooting up out of the ground
And your head is spinning from a loud guitar
And you just can't escape from the sound
Don't worry too much, it'll happen to you
We were children once, playing with toys
And the thing that you're hearing is only the sound
Of the low spark of high-heeled boys

I suppose we could just replace most headlines with "Trump tweets (mostly) words" and save ourselves a lot of time.

You're right about human trafficking today. But, it doesn't match the slave trade from the 1500s to the 1900s that was actively supported by the world powers of the day. Fortunately now, nost world powers like the US, the UK, other European states do not have legal slave trade. But some of our allies do, particularly around the Persian Gulf.

As for Trump's comment, he is completely wrong because it ignores, yet again, our own slave trade history. Nope, I'm not being politically minded here as I remember my own ancestors who was slave owners & prison guards in Tennessee.

It was an amendment that ended slavery right?

And we all know the only real amendment is the 2nd. So by that logic, it wouldn't even be wrong.

So 'but what about' ism's are OK now?

I'm sorry your ancestors sucked.

To be fair, human trafficking is pretty bad. The number of young girls who get wrapped up in it is not zero.

I don't think a lot of republicans consider slaves to be humans.

Of course it's worse now than it was during slavery. Now white people are affected.

The entire GOP would back a repeal of the 13th if their paymasters thought that A: they could get away with it and B: that there'd be profit in it. After all, they don't see poors as human.

Changes that, in most cases, either do nothing or make the problem worse. Kinda like the 'War on Drugs', really, with many of the same actors.

Sex trafficking is a bugaboo. The real trafficking happens to people legitimately looking for work, then get their passports yanked, and are forced to work under inhumane conditions and great risk of death. Think construction projects in the Middle East, and fishing trawlers as two examples. Sex trafficking is a drop in the bucket in comparison to actual slave labor not related to sex work.

In the US the two largest groups engaged in "unwilling" sex work are addicts and the desperate. Addicts are looking for their next hit, and will do anything to get money. For female "junkies" the "easy" way is to sell sex. The desperate are runaways, single mothers, et al. who are looking for money to buy food and shelter.

I used to volunteer with a group that helped those two groups exit the sex trade. The drug addled were moved toward treatement programs, and the desperate to help and job training or (if possible) services for minors. The problem being we've shredded the social safety net in America.

A lot of human trafficking is built on promises to a better way of life. I have an idea: make it easier and cheaper for people to move from one country to another for work.

But no, let's build a wall to keep "those people" out. JFC
