Did he buy condoms from the chemist, only to find out the chemist is his dad? Talk about awkward.

If the teen took the mom to prom, then the teen went to prom, so the cycle was broken.

I think that's sweet. My mother didn't go to her senior prom - not because she was pregnant, but because she couldn't afford it. My uncle was in Vietnam, and because he wasn't home working to help support the family, finances were tight. They just couldn't afford for her to go. I wish myself or my sister had thought of this when we were seniors in high school, just so she could say she went to prom and had a great time.

Our mom had to sacrifice a lot growing up, even later on when she was married and my sister and I were little. Maybe for her birthday this year, we'll throw a mini-prom at our parents' house for her. It'll be fun forcing my dad into a tuxedo. LOL

South Texas teen takes mom to prom, becomes internet sensation
Yeah, just like the last dozen or so times this (or variations) has happened around prom time in the past few years. This is one of those 'seasonal' news stories that someone wrote about in a book or something.

// dad takes daughter to prom
// sister takes brother to prom
// {famous person} takes person to prom

// google search for 'to prom'

I went to my senior prom.  Even had a date (surprisingly enough).  That was >20 years ago.  I remember the girl's first name, but I haven't talked to her since graduation and probably couldn't pick her out of a line-up at this point.  Prom is pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of life.

Do you have a handy guide of things that you approve for people to care about?  it would probably save everyone a lot of time if you could go ahead and let us know what we should consider meaningful.  This whole idea of living life and finding meaning in the things that affect us is horribly inexact and subjective.

Gawdzila: cefm: It's sad enough when high school kids don't realize that prom is meaningless.

Nah, every other second of your life is more meaningful.  When the constant-present of your existence isn't joyful enough and you need a crutch like a special occasion then, you, like, need to get some perspective and throw a party for triviality.  A promenade for meaninglessness would be a good start.

Huh?   You are literally calling something meaningless in the very thread of an article that describes how much meaning this particular event had for 2 people.    Like, you were proven wrong before you even typed out 2 words.

What you COULD have said is... "I'm happy for those folks.   Prom has no particular meaning for me, but God bless these less miserable people than".

The way you state this sounds like you believe that, because you don't think it wasn't a significant event in your life, that constitutes some kind of proof that it isn't significant for anyone?

That seems like a weird statement, no? It's like someone saying that "sports is meaningless". People say nonsense like that all the time. Well, there are people who play professional sports now who escaped poverty in other countries and made a good life for themselves and their families, not to mention distracted from the crushing poverty of their youth, by playing sports. Is it also meaningless for them?

The two points -- that frankly seem self-evident to me -- are that, 1) your personal experiences and feelings aren't generalizable to others, and 2) ....who the hell cares? Since when do we only do "meaningful" things? And what makes it meaningful or meaningless in the first place? A lot of people go to prom just because it is a fun and unique thing to do with the friends that helped shape one of the most important stretches of years in one's socialization process. Isn't that a good enough reason to go?

Really? Doing novel things or commemorating events with friends is a "crutch" for life enjoyment?
I couldn't possible eyeroll hard enough at this.

Coco LaFemme: I think that's sweet.

There was a time I would have agreed with you, but not anymore. I've met too many people that peaked in high school and could not let go or achieve anything else afterward. They've spent their lives chasing that era and living vicariously through their kids, forcing them into groups and activities simply because that's what mommy/daddy did. High School is for the child, not the parent. Let it go, and tell the kid that you're flattered and appreciate the thoughtful gesture, but it's their time, and take someone of their own group.

I missed my senior prom since my sophomore wife was 7 months pregnant. I wasn't big on social events anyway so i didn't care. I took her to her senior prom two years later (we got a baby sitter).  I wasn't excited about going but she wanted to go. If she puts up with me again this year we will make 44 years together
