I shanked another fifth-grader with a large piece of playground mulch back in 1979.  What's the statute of limitations on something like that?

To be fair, he was asking for it.

(Sorry, David, if you're still out there)

So what, I was held up with a combat knife for my G.I. Joe figures, when I was 10. The middle school I would have gone to had magnetically-locking doors and if you were caught outside by the bell too often, they called the cops and had your ass carted off.

Now, about why I dropped out in the 9th grade...

I hope the kids who got cut heal up alright, and I hope the 8 year old gets the counseling and help that he needs.  I don't think there is such a thing as an eight year old who can not be helped, so long as the adults remain calm, rational and caring when they deal with him.

I appreciate your optimism, but the kid should be put down humanely now. This is just the tip of the iceberg. This kid is going to be dangerous and a burden to society.

The kid in my homeroom asked me if I knew somebody who could get him 'stuff'.  Nothing lethal, you know.  For starters a poster of Nancy Claster. You know her as the Romper Room Teacher.  I directed him to Kenny "The Stuff Getter" Gettowitz.  Been held back in Kindergarten three years just for getting a "U" in Good Citizenship.  They had to bring in a bigger chair for him and his knees knocked up against the group table.  He was the only guy who could sleep during Nap Time.    Everyone else had to keep one eye open.  But not Kenny "The Stuff Getter".  Without him, there'd be no Nerds Candy.  No Cow Tails Candy and certainly no juice boxes.  No one would do anything to Kenny "The Getter" except wish him sweet dreams.  Even the teachers knew Kenny's racket but he helped keep the brats in line.   Goes to show you what a little hope can do

Took Kenny a week but Nancy Claster showed up.  It was from an earlier show "Guess What!"  Nancy was one of the chicks that turned boxes, opened curtains and escorted the losers off the stage.  She did a scene with a motorboat.  It was a bikini and it covered her naughty spots up to her navel but showed off the boom booms.  On a black and white tv, her and her bikini was bonersville but full color poster, well every kid that looked at that got on the puberty train early.  Kenny made a little extra selling sneak peeks to the other guys before turning it over to the kid.  The kid took it to the janitor who let him put it up in his 'office'.  Most kids avoided the janitor but the kid cosied up to him pretty quickly.  The janitor's a little weird.  He'll pop his glass eye out and tell you that 'he's got an eye on you.'  That shtick gets old fast.

The grade school my son went to had a bully who worked everything exactly like they do in a prison gang. This little psycho would pick a victim and mercilessly harass them in front of all and sundry, all day long, with barrages of insults and accusations of the worst possible crime: "being gay". At around 9 to 11 years old, this was Serious Business because if you couldn't beat the kid up for saying you were gay, that was pointed to as an admission it was true, and you would from thenceforward be ostracized by the boys AND the girls.   None of the other kids would stick up for my son, for fear of taking his place as the focus of this bully's attacks.  So soon he had a squad of followers who would go along to get along, and he could get them to do all kinds of mischief, just to keep on his good side and avoid being punished by the rest of the "herd".

When he'd built enough followers, the little creep ran the entire playground; he told the other kids what they could play, and where. He made them play games where he was always the winner and the determiner of the rules.  He extorted them for candy or other favors.   And he'd force them to help stage fake incidents to distract the adult monitoring the playground, in a fair approximation of the rope-a-dope, distract-the-ref routines at wrestling matches, so he could "enforce" his reign of terror.  While the fake incident was taking the adult playground supervisor's attention, this little punk would go tot he opposite side of the yard and brutalize my kid on a regular basis. His fave move was to cock-punch his victims, hard enough to make them crumple to the ground.  And there were never any witnesses who would dare say anything.

The teachers and the head nun thought I was off my rocker when I came in to complain that I might have to file a police report of assault and battery.  They told me I must be exaggerating and that the kid was from a fatherless, broken home, he was at the school on a poverty scholarship, blah blah blah...   I convinced the principal to take her lunch hour in an office with a window overlooking the exercise yard, and see for herself that the adult monitors were complete failures and this little 10-year-old boy was running her entire school like a cartel drug lord...  She did watch, and called us back the next day to say she'd seen everything happening exactly as we'd described, and she was suspending the ringleader for three days.

This news rocked the student body. They had three days of normal school and play time, without this bully controlling everything and making tension. Some started to realize what they had been missing.  When the bad boy came back, he was given another stern warning that he was on probation and being watched, but he couldn't help himself, and went right back to his game. But now he was under scrutiny and was called out on his activity as soon as he started in.  He went nuts, this time, with the teacher in the room watching him try to re-establish his dominence of the other students with open threats.  They booted his ass for good by lunch, that first day back from the suspension.

What happened next was unexpected.   Many of the kids who had formerly assisted this bully in dominating my son and others, boys AND girls, came up to my son and apologized for not standing up to the bully and going along with things that were wrong, out of fear of becoming victims themselves.  It didn't heal everything, and my kid still suffers some scars and troubles from that bad year, as an adult.

Calm, rational and caring.
His parents? Maybe.
His teachers? Maybe.
School administration? Probably not.
Parents of stabbed/slashed kids? Highly unlikely.

Can't they freak out just a little and ruin the 8 year-old's life? Not permanently, mind you. But for at least a year.

I mean, that seems like something you'd hire a PI to document and bring to the attention of the school. Hell, most of them would probably take a case like that for free.

My poor mother won't be able to cook if knives get banned. That's her one hobby (and reading). And you would take that away from her, you monster? I KEED, I KEED

I often wonder if people realize how much dangerous stuff is around them every day. Example:

I wasn't even sure how you could hammer a file into a shank without annealing it.  Files are pretty brittle

Interestingly enough, that's how Buck Knives (pretty sure it was Buck) got started. They'd take old files and turn them into knives. Obviously, you'd start with a pretty hefty file. I'm reasonably sure that History Channel did a thing on knives back before it was all aliens, all the time.

Just because you were held back in the 5th grade 4 times doesn't make it "9th" grade.
