Whenever one of these stories comes out, I see a lot of people posting "I wasn't influenced by anything except my own thinking no matter what Russia did" on Facebook. Of course, all those posts are pre-prepared memes.

I get about one per week... but I've pretty much limited my circle to just family.

The well known fact that people are not influenced by advertising is supported by the fact that pharmaceutical companies spend more money on advertising and marketing than on researching new drugs. Also advertising being the thing that effectively supports all of the internet and all of television for the last 6 decades. But really, all that advertising is just a public service to educate, perhaps to gently remind consumers, about the choices that they were already going to make.

Did we really need a 'new study' to verify this? I thought it was just common knowledge at this point.

Its pretty normal to get lost in all the ads before an election. They are so pervasive. All over the TV, the radio, the Internet. It is incredibly taxing to deal with all the stuff you know is untrue.

If you are influenced by political ads on Facebook then it's probably time to turn off your computer and toss it out the window.

I have never signed up for Facebook and never will.  The extent of my social media was a page on Geocities long ago and currently WordPress.  My personal view is fark Facebook and fark Twitter although there are some pretty smart and/or funny people on both.  I can still read their stuff without signing up if it is interesting.

I am about to delete the Peel Remote app from my phone.  Recently, the app started flooding my phone with random ads.  It was kinda funny when it was games that I would never download or some gimmicky product that I did not need.  Over the past few days, I have been receiving ads for Casey Cagle who is running for governor of Georgia.  That lets me know two things.  One, the app is geotracking me.  Two, they will post ads for anyone who pays.  I don't want political bullshiat on my phone.  It is bad enough to see roadway litter propaganda and shiat.  It is too damn much when I can't login on my phone without seeing some asshat that I would not vote for if my life depended on it.

Just being real here,

Anybody stupid enough to vote for a given party based on FB is an idiot. I would like to think that Americans were smarter than that, but clearly it's not the case.

That being said, I don't think we should criminalize online interactions, solely because only idiots seem to read one page, no source, straight up propaganda.
Let them vote. Idiots have rights too.

Pepsi and Coke spend billions on ads every year, but you're not influenced by those. Or Honda, or Toyota, or GM... ads, such a waste of time. You'd think all these companies would realize they're wasting that money.

Anybody stupid enough to think that "votes were based upon FB ads" is likewise an idiot. But you go right ahead thinking that a couple of posts made someone change their entire mode of thinking and voted Trump instead of Clinton.

It's been established over and over again that CamAnal's data scraping was not like that; and that this was psyops tactics, if not rising to the level of psychological warfare, then something well beyond mere advertising. But you go right on believing that this was just some dummies falling for a few ads

It's not the ads that bother me.

it's that they were so easily debunk-able and people failed to do any of it.

You get the feeling that these were people that would see an ad for a pharmaceutical on TV, any pharmaceutical, and would jump up and exclaim that whatever it was they NEEDED to have it, whether it addressed medical issues they had or not.

Venture capital selected for technologies that would reinforce pre-existing opinions. Wouldn't matter if it was an ad for a boner pill or the Flat Earth Conspiracy.

However, the ad was posted by a now alternate future Dark Saint of Gin that warned me of the terrible consequences of voting for Hillary.

So *blows raspberry*
