While that may be true, that does not mean that there are no consequences for saying things.

Lying to a cop is a crime.  It goes under the more formal name of "obstruction of justice", and don't want to be hit with that.  If they really wanted to stick to Mr. Freedom O'Speech, they'd believe his age and stick him in a foster home until he turned "18".

I lived near Florida beaches for a good 25 years and saw a LOT of people get let off the hook for alcohol charges.  They were the ones who were polite because a lot of those cops really don't want to arrest a kid because he's doing the same thing a bunch of other underage kids are doing.  But mouth off to them after they've been dealing with drunk assholes all day just invites trouble. into your life you don't need.

Turns out the correct answer is "I'm 19 officer. Yes, here is my ID. (Don't show him your fake ID for farks sake). Yes this is my beer. Yes I was stupid thinking I could get away with it."  That gives you a chance the cop makes you pour out your beer and find a safe method home.  Cops are people, they were underage once too.  Being a dick guarantees your arrest because suddenly now it's worth his time.

I've never seen anyone ticketed for underage drinking who was respectful.

Wait, you're just flat not allowed to drink in America til you're 21?

I can understand not being able to buy, but not being able to consume alcohol at all seems a bit heavy handed. I would imagine cops would have their hands full with that alone on weekends.

Yes, and it's ridiculous.

Some states have more relaxed laws then others (In WI, for instance, you can drink in a bar as long as your over 18 and your parent/guardian is present.

In almost all situations, no matter the crime or infraction, getting lippy with the cop isn't doing yourself any favors. The general rule is you shouldn't fark with people with the power to ruin your day.

Not in Walton County.  The newspaper linked here has a whole section devoted to "Spring Break arrests" complete with mug shot every year.  There are hundreds of them.

Do not drink underage between Pensacola and Panama City Beach.  You will go to jail.

yeah i don't see how anyone can think mouthing off to a cop is going to make the situation better. My best friend in college constantly berated cops when he got pulled over. He'd get stopped for speeding and then end up with a half dozen tickets for everything imaginable. The more he ran his mouth the more the cops would just keep writing tickets.

Back before M.A.D.D. had such a stranglehold on law enforcement (not that it's necessarily a bad thing), I probably got pulled over a 1/2 dozen times with booze in the car. Most of them underage. Worst thing I ever got was they "confiscated" a case and a half of beer from me. Another time one made me open and dump out each beer in a 12 pack. Never got a ticket, just stern warnings and loss of booze. Was ALWAYS polite, respectful, and appearing remorseful. Even got let go by a state trooper. That does NOT happen anymore. You get pulled over by a MO hypo and you're getting a ticket.

Bingo.

With all the times I have been pulled over, I only received a speeding ticket that documented my actual speed once.  On all of the other occasions, I received a warning, or the officer took it down to 5 over the limit.

But I was really lucky this past summer.  During Labor Day Weekend, my ride was in the shop, so they gave me a loaner.  Well....the loaner didn't have a front license plate.  So after visiting my parents, I begin the 3 1/2 drive home.  I get pulled over for not having a front plate...and when he asked for registration and insurance, I explained that it was a loaner, and those items could be in the glove box, but I didn't know for sure.  (It was PACKED with various papers....and I fully admit I was lazy and didn't check for those items earlier.)  So I had him my driver's license and CCW permit (since I was carrying)...he quickly ran my info, and let me go.

Yup. You can vote,  but cigs and porn, and go lay down your life for your country at 18, but by god if a law enforcement officer sees you consuming any alcohol before you're 21, it's anywhere from a ticket (on your permanent record) for M.I.P. all the way up to a fine and jail time. You'd have to have a pretty shiatty lawyer, pissed off judge , or committed some other egregious offense while drinking (like this idiot) to get the latter, but it happens.

I don't get why "the law" says 21.

The European approach to drinking is more effective and reasonable.

You don't get let go anymore because cops aren't on the same mission they used to be on.

Now,it's about generating revenue and appeasing the fire and brimstone baby boomers who want people tossed in prison for every minor infraction.
