Happens all the time, those water spouts in the Tampa Bay Area. They even come ashore too.

That's why I found people here in Alabama so strange, freaking out everytime thunderstorms came in, emptying shelves of bread, milk when they arrive. That was like everyday in the summer back home.

That bridge was done by the same firm that built the one that collapsed in Ft Lauderdale earlier this year.

The real question is was the water spout on meth when it happened.

I hate going over the Skyway in any conditions. I'd hate it a lot more if there was a waterspout bearing down on me. Thankfully, I no longer have to commute to St. Pete for work.

No, they built the current one. American Bridge Company or something

And that bridge didn't collapse all by itself it took a freighter hitting it to help knock it down.

A tornado? Technically I guess. Typically 67 mph winds apparently. Hardly what I would call a tornado, where a straw can get shoved through a tree trunk.

And I know that Floridians have to be amused too, their hurricanes spawn the real thing.

I feel like Paul Hogan should be in the next frame pulling the Joplin twister out of a sheath.

Yep; my mom lives a couple miles from the Skyway. Waterspouts are pretty much a daily occurrance in the summer. When I was a kid, storms would start around 5pm *every* day, all summer long. You could practically set your watch by it.

Flew down to visit some friends near Sarasota a couple years ago, and we drove up to Tampa for a Lightning game and to hit a couple strip clubs. Heading home at about 2AM, as we were approaching that bridge, I sparked up a joint and we all smoked it while driving over.

It looks like they've done a lot to address that though.  A ship would have to run aground to hit the pier.

Many moons ago when my dad picked me up from college he decided since we'd never been across it we'd go out of our way a little it and take the Skyway.  Turned out we didn't realize it got backed up at rush hour and we got stopped for a few minutes at the dead center of it, like the joint between the center road panels ran beneath our legs.  It was windy and the amount of bridge movement from the wind was definitely unexpected.  Dad had worked in a building in Chicago that moved a lot when it was windy so we knew it wasn't anything to worry about but it was...disconcerting, lol.

I hope that doesn't give anyone any bright ideas about how they'd want to put a bridge across Puget Sound.

Thanks for the lecture, Captain Buzzkill. Besides, as I stated, it was like 2 or 230AM and the speed limit on the bridge is like 40 or 45 from what I remember. We were pretty much the only car around, and our driver didn't smoke much (if at all...I actually don't recall).

If anything I am the anti-Cpt Buzzkill....I do like my pot, however, there are places and times for such herbage. Driving high in a car is not one of them.

Not only did they not mention not having car accidents and not killing people, we don't know whether they might have not mentioned it due to forgetting about it.

Not even the same thing. The Narrows spans about a mile or so of water.

Idiots have been wanting to build a bridge from Seattle across the Sound for decades now. That's about 10 miles.

I was in electronics lab at Lakewood HS just up the road from there when that happened.

We were the only classroom with a TV.  The whole school got electronics lessons that day.

Seriously, Mr. Milliken there insisted that you be able to recite Ohm's law, or submit to the brief lesson, in order to enter the shop and watch the news.

The Narrows is Puget Sound. You can't build a Sunshine Skyway type bridge further North because the water is too deep and the span too wide. It would be really good for Seattle if it could expand to the West to relieve transportation and housing issues. But I've lived on an island before, so I understand your "pull up the drawbridge now that I have mine" attitude (assuming you really live on Whidbey Island). It's worse in the San Juans.

I lived in Tampa for about 5 months, and went over that bridge while getting a hummer from some skeevy hooker. We were doing rails off of the console, and the really fun part was trying not to gag the hooker while leaning into the back seat to grab a beer out of the cooler. I liked to chase down a shot of tequila with a nice frosty brew, so it was necessary. Once I nutted we sparked up a bong and did donuts on the center span. It was a hell of a lot of fun. The hardest part was booting up the coke because I had to then drive with no hands - but once I got a single knee on the wheel that didn't stop the hooker from doing her thing, it was all good.

While I was attending Eckerd, we would roll out the rescue boats at least once a month to search for floaters.  You always knew what would wash up when you  found the operable automobile parked at the top of the bridge.
