Our for-profit bail bond system is farked up. The only other country in the world that has that is the Philippines.

That couldn't have been very cost-effective.

Bail bonds are a big part of what allows the USA to incarcerate more of its citizens than any other country in the world.  And think of all the cool movies and TV shows we'd lose without bail bonds.

Ten percent finders fee.

I wonder if the bounty hunters would have been arrested if they were the only surviving witnesses.

My bounty hunter story: I knew a girl who came into her apartment in downtown Raleigh one day and a bounty hunter had scaled three stories apparently and kicked her window ac unit in to break into her apartment because he was looking for some guy that apparently lived there before she did.

She called the cops and he bolted.

"Five members of the team came into the bedroom, with a sixth remaining in the living room. Mitchell reported that Baker pointed his rifle at the family lying in bed. Mitchell was brought outside, handcuffed and taken away.
Mitchell was taken to the Ravalli County jail, which would not accept him because the MCAG team did not have any paperwork or warrant allowing them to take him into custody. Mitchell was booked after it was discovered he had a different warrant out for his arrest, but that warrant only allowed him to be arrested by a peace officer. "

JFC da fuuuuuq, man. We are supposed to be a civilized society.

Who ever owns the bond didn't have to pay out the $885 due to the fact the the guy didn't show up in court.

/stupid article is stupid

Wonder if the bounty hunters would have been so gung-ho if the knew it was over $115.  Wonder why the bail bondsman was so willing to pay these guys over just $115

Several years ago some moran bounty hunters from Pennsylvania showed up at a house in Jersey and tried to break in.  The occupants of the house called the local moran cops, who refused to do anything despite the fact that the moran bounty hunters could not prove that the woman they were trying to 'apprehend' was in fact the person they were looking for.   Eventually the moran bounty hunters realized that the person they had abducted was NOT the person who had skipped, so the morans kicked the woman out of their car 40 miles from her home in the middle of the night.

The moran bounty hunters were eventually arrested, but the only thing the prosecutor could get them on was illegal carry in NJ since they did not have valid NJ carry permits, and NJ does not recognize out of state carry permits.

The moran cops were fired, but then reinstated with back pay, plus interest, by an administrative law judge.

Something good did come out of this.  So many people were enraged after hearing what happened to this woman that Trenton enacted very strict bail enforcement laws.  To engage in bail enforcement in NJ a person MUST be licensed as a bail enforcement agent in by the state, out of state licsenses are not recognized.  Furthermore, the only people who qualify for a bail enforcement license are retired LEO.

I don't understund any of this?! How is the law not explicit here? How about we upgrade the scenario to: Homeowner attempts to fight back and loses because it would have been 6 vs 1.  So he's been murdered in his own home defending his wife and 4 yo. What would the montana judicial system think of that? Would we still have to debate this insane farking bullshiat?!

"She also indicates that Baker, as a bounty hunter, should be viewed in the same light a law enforcement officer allowed to conduct an arrest would be."

Remind.me.if I ever find myself in Montana for some bizarereason to print out business cards that say bounty hunter.

Caught me speeding? I'm on the job officer, just like you!

Caught me hooker?? No no I was questioning a witness, just like you can do officer only I don't have a nice police station.so I used a cheap hotel. No pants is just part of my process.

But still a law enforeenfor officer because I say so!

If one guy can't fight off six guys in his own home, does he really deserve freedom or a family?

There's so much odd about this story.

Somebody owed a a bondsman only $115 dollars for bail?

Six people were needed to collect the hundred fifteen dollars? Wouldn't the time taken mean that is less than minimum wage? Nevermind the equipment involved for which any one piece is worth more.

A town has the name Lolo? Wasn't that a puzzle game?

A man has the name Vaness?

Charges against Wallace and Reese-Bamford were filed along with the other cases in August, but authorities have not been able to locate the pair. A $1,000 arrest warrant is active for Wallace, and a $5,000 warrant is active for Reese-Bamford.

Irony there?

I often wonder... don't they realize that it's much safer for everyone involved if they can come to a more amicable solution to the problem. Maybe, you know, call your guy/girl the night before and drive them to court. It would seem to be much easier than hunting them down like a dog.

Yeah that is what I was thinking.  Plus the kidnapping involved guns, so extra special plusses on the charges.

The homeowner sounds like a piece of work: he didn't pay his babysitter and she had to go back to the house with her mother to collect.
Stiffing the babysitter is one thing, but not paying her?

The cops were called.  When they showed up, they did nothing to check if the warrant out of PA was real.  They did nothing to verify the identity of the woman in question.  The woman and her spouse later claimed the cops laughed at and insulted them as the goon bounty hunters slapped the cuffs on and threw this woman into their car.

You must first understand the mindset of these people. They are wannabe military bros that fetishize guns and war and being a hero, but are too chickenshiat, lazy and out of shape to actually join the US military.
When you understand this type of personality, it makes complete sense. Even if it's insane.

Why would the cop union put pressure on the prosecutor for the bounty hunters? You would think they would be pissed someone was on their turf.

What that excerpt fails to mention is bounty hunters don't get a free pass for breaking into the wrong house or grabbing the wrong person.

Correct.  The cops allowed this woman to be kidnapped.  If the moran bounty hunters had been brought to trial, the cops would have been required to appear as witnesses, and no one in the union wanted that.

The chief of police quietly retired shortly after this took place. The cops at the scene were fired, than reinstated with back pay +.

The woman and her husband who were victimized by the cops and bounty hunters received an out of court settlement where the town and cops admitted to no wrongdoing.  The sum paid out was sealed by the court and the plaintiffs were required to sigh a nondisclosure.  They eventually sold their house and moved out of town.
