Would the scenes made for a smoother movie without all the gaps? I think the wrong parts may have been cut.

It was exactly 1 movie too long

We've come a long way, baby.  Their unfinished CGI looks like the final version of The Last Starfighter:

My expectations were certainly subverted.

Did Luke still get gaslighted by Yoda?
Is there still an entirely unnecessary subplot?
Does a creepy stalker still ruin a suicidal effort to stop the big laser? My causing a huge deadly crash? At the feet of the AT-ATs?
Is Rey still a nobody despite all evidence to the contrary?
Is Leia still flying around dead in space?
Can ships jumping to Hyperspace still kamikaze, because the opposite happened in Rogue One.

Deleted scenes don't tend to make films shorter.

Phasma has to be the worst character in the new trilogy. The deleted scene did nothing but make her actually look worse. Why let Finn talk at all?

2018-03-21 04:06:45 PM
I can see why most of the scenes were deleted, but I think the movie would have been better with the Caretaker party. It was nice to hear Luke laugh.

I'm not clicking, but I hope they gave Leia an umbrella for the Mary Poppins cosplay.

It was too damn long. I remember thinking shiat was about to wrap up and then "oh wait they haven't even been to that weird white and red planet yet"

I enjoyed last jedi well enough.

I'd say that 70-80% of those scenes should've been used.

(and cut all the running time from the ill-advised side mission to casino world.)

Along those same lines, there were a few deleted scenes from Episode III that, while being a subplot, would've shown the seeds of the Rebellion, complete with more Mon Mothma.

skribble: should have kept the Luke scenes in.

*Spoiler Alert*

The deleted scenes make it a little more clear why he showed up on Crait at the end.  After seeing it in the theater I was curious about his seemingly sudden change of heart.  Some of the deleted scenes explained it.  The novel does an even better job.

Now that Carrie is gone it looks like Chewie is the only one left of the original four(5 if you count Kenobi) heros of Luke, Leia, Han and Chewie.  The new band appears to be Chewie, Rey Finn and Rose.  Would be cool to see a non-human character become the leader of the group but it looks like Rey will fill that role.

It looks like Poe was setup to become the new leader of "The Resistance" after Holdo and Leia whipped him into shape.  But I'd rather see Lieutenant Connix played by Carrie's daughter or Commander Larma D'Acy played by Amanda Lawrence become the new leader.  D'Acy probably makes the most sense logistically as she's the next highest ranking officer that I'm aware of.  I threw Connix in just because she's played by Carrie's daughter and that would be kinda cool.

Does anyone know if any/all of Leia's scenes for Ep 9 were shot before Carrie passed?  It sure appeared that she was intended to be Rey's new mentor.  I can't think of any character alive that would be better.

An appearance by a certain Baron Administrator and scoundrel would put a smile on my face too.

Yeah, that's how it works, subby. Add deleted scenes to a movie and you, by definition, make it longer.

JJ just finished the script a few months ago, so she didn't get to shoot anything for 9. Its one of the reasons I wish they had changed TLJ around some after she died. Now it'll have to be done off screen because they are not going to use CGI.

2018-03-21 04:47:45 PM
They should have left the Luke scenes in and skipped the casino planet. I love Finn but that was a complete waste of him.

2018-03-21 04:52:30 PM
I hate them cutting it the scene of Luke and the Porg orgy.  Sure leave in the titty play with the Sea Sirens, but not Luke taking on forty porgs in a last man standing sex fest.
It's outrageous.  It's unfair.

2018-03-21 05:03:53 PM
I still love that Yoda made a joke that only paid off an hour later.  He was totally screwing with Luke, and Luke didn't even know it.

Point was CG at that time was not good enough for use in motion pictures.

/Ackbar's Death Star II attack run simulation was CG, done by the folks who now run PIXAR

Gaslighting isn't "lying". If Yoda had convinced Luke that everything he knew was a lie and that Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru were in fact a secret Sith cult that was sacrificing children to a graven image of Darth Vader, you might have a point. Simply lying isn't "gaslighting".

Gaslighting is a form of manipulation that seeks to sow seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or in members of a targeted group, hoping to make them question their own memory, perception, and sanity. Using persistent denial, misdirection, contradiction, and lying, it attempts to destabilize the target and delegitimize the target's belief

The main plot was stupid. The subplots were stupider.

I've no idea how any of this passed muster.

Probably not, but there's an awful lot of "Why the fark am I looking at this?" involved...

scottydoesntknow: Phasma has to be the worst character in the new trilogy. The deleted scene did nothing but make her actually look worse. Why let Finn talk at all?

This. I don't understand what she adds in Force Awakens or The Last Jedi. I didn't even know it was a woman until I saw an interview with her.

I'm not at all opposed to more diversity in Star Wars. It makes sense in general, especially on the Rebel side. However that one was a real shoehorn. And I thought even the original trilogy the point was Empire = Nazis, who were (are?) pretty much white men.

I bought it.  I'll watch it few more times.  The fight scene between Rey and Luke is fun if way too short.  And like Poe getting treated like a he's an idiot.

I keep hearing this, but that sequence is barely 10-15 minutes long in a 150 minute movie. Maybe the different pacing was why it stuck out, but it was not too long.

My Star Wars opinion is the only one that matters.
