So this is what you get when you are teachers?  Glad I'm out of school.

An excellent lesson in responsible gun ownership.

I've seen people get into a hurry and put their mag back in BEFORE they close the chamber. I imagine that is what happened. And he pulled the trigger, but that goes without saying. He probably needs a refresher course....

A good guy teaching a firearms safety class could have stopped him.

Why would you teach a firearm safety class using live ammunition?  I have never seen any competent trainer make such a mistake.

Probably wasn't certified by the NRA.

He adds that, "Clearly, we will revisit this incident to ensure that something like this would never happen again."

By giving more teachers guns.  That should do it.  We just need more guns.

That was a poorly written article. It should have been a paragraph. A single paragraph.

I remember being in Army basic training. First day with the M-16 in a fox hole on a firing range. We were advised not to put the selector into 3 round burst or semi automatic mode. So what does the guy next to me do? Puts the thing into automatic mode and pulls the trigger. Shocked, he raises up the weapon into the sky still continuing to pull the trigger.

Within moments two MP's take the guy by his shoulders and raises him up out of the fox hole, and takes him for not following orders. He received an Article-15 for his conduct that day.

It's too bad there was no one to warn us that maybe arming teachers was a bad idea.

Anyone else notice that John Wick modified his gun handling in between the first and second movie?

In the second movie, he starts pulling the slide back a small bit after loading to visually inspect if a round in chambered.

That even trained, intelligent, and capable people can and will make mistakes from time to time and that entrusting them with a deadly weapon in such an environment is an unnecessary risk?

So there are:
irresponsible gun owners
criminal gun owners
gun owners with mental health problems
Suicides with guns
gun owners who have accidents

When will responsible, non-criminal, no mentally impaired, non-accident prone, non suicidal gun owners step up to the plate?

From the article:

"Ferrante adds that Alexander has been put on administrative leave pending the outcome of his department's investigation, which will determine if any of the department's policies regarding the safe handling of firearms were violated. "

Er, hello? anyone home? Of course the safe handling of the firearm was violated!  Otherwise the gun wouldn't have gone off now wouldn't?

Geez, bunch of rocket scientist brain surgeons...all of them...

Not his fault!  His money order for the safety class was in dollars, and the NRA only accepts payment in rubles these days.

Logically fallacious, bud.

When people do things "right" they tend to not get noticed. That doesn't mean these people don't exist.

We need to arm students to defend themselves. And the other teachers. The only thing that stops a bad teacher with a gun is a good teacher with a gun.

2018-03-14 08:32:23 AM
With all these accidental firearm discharges in gun safety classes, we need to outlaw gun safety classes.

2018-03-14 08:34:16 AM
The number one rule of gun safety is never get complacent about the gun safety process. When followed properly, there is a zero chance of error. The problem is that people get complacent ALL THE TIME, especially non-professionals. I am ex-Military and had the safety protocols drilled into my head so many times it's impossible for me to deviate from them.

This is why you cannot, and must not, introduce more guns into classrooms.

"UPDATE 5pm: Sand City Police Chief Brian Ferrante says that Alexander had his last gun safety training "a little less than a year ago.""

If this happens to someone inexperienced with carrying and handling handguns, then chalk it up to their lack of training.    If it happens to someone who has plenty of training and experience carrying, then it is a sign that they were moving too quickly while presenting (perhaps in an attempt to seem cool) and/or  have spent hours handling and dry firing playing with their unloaded gun leading to bad trigger finger muscle memory/habits.

At approximately 1:20pm March 13 at Seaside High, Dennis Alexander, a math and administration of justice teacher

...not any more...

...who is also a Seaside city councilman...

...good luck in the next election...

and a reserve officer for Sand City Police Department,

...not any more...

accidentally discharged his firearm during a gun safety demonstration.

WTF?  Who the fark plays show-and-tell with his service weapon at a school?  What kind of guy shows off like that for the approval of children?

Heh wut?  I always put my magazine in before I close the chamber.  That's how you load the firearm.

That said, what a F'n moron.  1)  Impromptu firearms safety demonstrations are never a good idea.  2) Teacher, city councilman and cop?  Does that town have a population of 20 or something?  3) No live ammunition allowed in the classroom during the instruction portion of a gun class.  BECAUSE THIS!  4) Always have at least one other instructor or student verify the firearm is unloaded every time it is handled.  BECAUSE THIS!

Fire this idiot from all three of his jobs.

They said not semi-auto, not 3 round burst, seems like full auto is all that is left.

I'm still trying to figure out the four position fire selector on an M-16.  All the ones I ever encountered were either:  Safe-Semi-3 burp or Safe-Semi-Full burp.  I've never seen one that had both 3 burp and full burp on it.

I was in years ago. 1987  mine had single, 3 round and full automatic selector switch. Never touched one since 1990 so I don't know if they changed them.
