Oh booooooo!  I think that new chile one is really tacky looking. I much preferred their turquoise license plate design; I thought it was a beautiful nod to the state "gem."

Meanwhile Oklahoma's new Mockingjay plate is the second redesign in a decade. They could have used the money to comply with RealID, but instead we got new plates. Oh well. At least they look nice.

To bad they rank 49th in education, so most of the drivers won't be able to spell chile.

I moved from NM to OK in 1998.  The woman at the city utilities office welcomed me "back to the States!"

Gee, thanks, Fark.  Now you've got me curious about the fringe world of License Plate Collectors and Aficionados, and I'm falling down the rabbit hole of the ALPCA website.  This happened to me a few years ago with Vexillology, of all things, but it looks like there are even fewer license plate enthusiasts than flag enthusiasts.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not making fun of fringe groups.  I'm a barbershop quartet nerd, after all, so I have no room to talk.

I like the new Chili plate, so far I haven't seen it on a car color that didn't look good. Whereas the turquoise plates look totally crappy on certain color cars. Throw that turquoise plate on a red auto and it jangles with discord, throw it on a blue car that's NOT also the same same shade of turquoise and you have disharmony. The only autos that look good with the turquoise plate are neutral colored ones, the Chili plates look good on any color.

Notice that the design takes a neutral position on the official New Mexico State Question:

red or green?

I think they're both nice, as is the classic yellow-and-red design. New Mexico has nice looking license plates, with the exception of the hot air balloon ones from a few years ago, which I thought were tacky.

I think Nevada also has nice license plates (maybe I'm prejudiced because that's where I grew up, but I do like them).  Each of the last three designs has been nice (the one from the late 1980s to the latest one are shown below):

Yeah. I have family in Taos, and there are young'uns who'll need schooling soon. There's talk of moving when the kids are ready for grade school. Sucks because Taos is very pretty otherwise.

The schools in Taos are a mixed bag.  The high school is pretty good.  My son graduated from THS. I worked at one of the charters for a year.

Well we can't have the State deciding if we should have Green Chili Enchaladas or Carne Adovada!

Just curious, does NM get pissed that Colorado touts 'green chile' as their's?

At least it's something different.  My state (KS) bunted some time back and just put the state capitol dome on all the license plates, drivers licenses, letterheads, whatnot.  You know... the dome.  The one that looks EXACTLY LIKE the state capitol dome of, oh, 32 other states.  That's when you know a state isn't even trying any more.

A preferable design that has USA on it:

It would be nice if license plates omitted any kind of state specific identification.  Cops targeting out-of-state drivers is a well known issue.  But some people just like to mess with out-of-state drivers.  When I fly to another state and grab a rental car with local plates, no problem.  When I drive my personal vehicle to another state, problems.  Probably doesn't help that my home state is the Florida of the west and isn't well liked by nearby states, but I know that drivers with Cali plates have similar issues when driving in Oregon or Washington.

Hell yes, I took the turquoise one when I first registered when moving here. I laughed when I saw the first chile one a few months ago, thinking it was cheesy. Then *everyone*got one.

Still cheesy, though.

There are a half-dozen states who take that to the extent of branding your license plate with your county.  So the cops can go all "Oh, you live in Sioux Falls, you think you're all better than us, don'tcha?"

litespeed74: Just curious, does NM get pissed that Colorado touts 'green chile' as their's?

Yes because we have the Crown Jewels of Chili's known as Hatch, NM. Our Hatch Chili's are larger and meatier and most importantly far more flavorful than Chili's from inferior out of state growers.

Or if you have regional tax authorities, the locals can determine if you're avoiding taxes or not.  I know a couple people who registered their cars with relatives in another county to avoid paying the extra registration fees that their home county collects.

We moved to Rio Rancho from NC in 2006. We love the weather, the people, and the food. We started a side businesses making and selling a special type of desk that ships nationwide. We engrave the company logo and location on each desk. Since most of our business is out-of-state, we quickly found that we needed to add "U.S.A." at the bottom.

Truth be told, most of the green chiles used in Colorado green chile comes from New Mexico. We don't produce enough of them up here to satisfy the demand. The difference is in how we prepare it. I have a bunch of Hatch chiles in my freezer right now.

Love both styles.
