Now, a lot of you smug libs are probably thinking "they could always use a boat", but President Donald J. Trump has outsmarted you again.  He's going to repeal onerous regulations like Archimede's Principle which has held back America for too long.

I'd like to see these criminals try to get in when the upward buoyant force that is exerted on a body immersed in a fluid whether fully or partially submerged, is no longer equal to the weight of the fluid that the body displaces and no longer acts in the upward direction at the center of mass of the displaced fluid.

Checkmate!

When Trump sketched his vision for a wall he wrote " where he meant '.

Did anybody ask the Germans to help build it?

We had a really nice wall. With a warning system and some fences and some mines and armed partrols with orders to shoot. Hm, sounds like a US very high security prison plus some mines.

But then some low power former US president wanted some doghnuts and we had to tear it down.

Reminds me of something I read years ago about a safe company saying their safe was uncrackable. People who wanted to try crack the safe were denied access to safe saying it had trade secrets or something.  With predictable results, some group cracked the new safe.  So, basically they don't want people to look at this being it would really be a downer if someone could just easily bypass it and it be another waste of taxpayer's money.

It's from Fallout 4.  Looks heavily modded, though, Covenant's entrance doesn't face a hillside.

There are different designs.
For it to be effective, it has to have both vertical reach as well as subterranean depth.
That means it should be:
Too high to get over.
Too low to get under.

Between federalism (causing trouble in state/local legislation), balance of powers (suing in federal courts), and the fillibuster (blocking bills in the senate), there is a lot that a minority party can do to obstruct.

Yeah, like any of them are ever going to work. They'll work about as well as the French Maginot line, which the idea greatly resembles.

In fact, the Trump Wall is exactly analogous to the French Maginot Line:  a crumbling, corrupt old Empire, tired of its many wars, tries to hide behind a big, beautiful wall. The Enemy, being the ratfinks that they are, simply walk around it. The French mistake being building a wall that did not run through Belgium, Luxemberg, Germandy, Switzerland, Italy and then along the coast of France to the  Pyraneese and back the long way round.

Before it is even built, the Trump Wall is completely useless and worse than useless. It is just an excuse to pay contractors the trillion dollars that should be spent on socially and economically useful infrastructure on a grand funeral monument to a giant sick ego. You know, like the great "granaries" of Egypt.

Make busy work that does not threaten to make the wrong people rich, namely the working and middle classes.

Introducing Mr. Trump to his "legacy" project:  Mr. Maggot, meet the Maginot Line, Maginot, meet Mr. Maggot.

You know who has all the cement and steel needed to build the Wall. America's allies. But Trump hates anything that is not Trump, so it is only natural that he hates all of America's friends and allies and will only play with America's sworn enemies, Russia and China and dictators and fascists juntas.

The point of the Wall is to be useless. It is to be a giant suck-hole and money pit to glorify the Name of Trump forever.

Man has an Ozymandius complex. He wants to make a desert and call it peace. He wants to bult a giant tomb to be remembered by. He was to set the world (and Paris, of course) on fire and watch it burn, saying in his cold dead heart, beat that guys!

Trump is at best, the insane authoritarian bastid President from the bizarre SF novel, Keep the Giraffe Bulding.

The wise guy in that book builds a line of retirement towers along the Mexico border. A brilliant plant which uses stupid old patriots to "patrol the border". Then he nukes the towers, killing two birds with one stone:  the enormous cost of White Entitlements (social security) and the immense coast of preventing people who want to work from crossing the border.

Brilliant. Makes Richard Nixon and Trump combined look like a poof made of cotton candy. This satire was written and published when Trump was just an impatient kid, wishing the Old Man would die so he could show the world how it is done.

Now that wall would work. It would save trillions of dollars on society security and health care. It would protect the border efficiently and permanently, give or take half a million years of radiation. And it would allow the USA to step back from the cold war posturing with honor and dignity, because they could reduce their nuclear arsenal at virtually zero cost. All sane objectives, ruthlessly and cost-effectively achieved.

What Trump has in mind is mere madness, however.

The Election of Donald Jerky Boyz Trump has been nothing more or less than the suicide of America the Bountyful. Well, to be fair, that loony half of America which is properly called Amerika-ka-ka the Bootyful.

What can you say about a man who throws paper towels at a nation of flood victims while denying sea level rise and climate change?

It was mostly Royal Bounty, but it should have been Brawny, only Trump hates the Kochs as much as anybody else who is more successful that he (Trump) is.

Well they haven't done any of that that I heard of. If they did he would have specified it instead of simply saying they're obstructing everything. That was true under Obama, not Trump.

The Maginot Line worked as intended. The French never expected the Germans to throw themselves at the defensive fortifications, but try to go around it, which was something they had been anticipating. The idea that the French were caught totally unprepared for Germany to simply circumvent by going through Belgium is a myth, in fact, they were counting on it. No, where France made it's mistake was underestimating the speed of the German advance and assuming that the Ardennes forest would prove enough of an obstacle to slow or prevent the Germans from getting their armor through it.

In short, the point of the Maginot Line wasn't to deter an invasion at all, but to force the Germans to go around it, slowing their advance and funneling their forces into spots where the French could easily concentrate their own troops and repel the invasion.

Access and time. No lock is unpickable if it can be opened in some way. From your cheap TSA baggage lock to Fort Knox, anything can be opened with access and time.

I'm reminded of the famed Chubbs lock. It was thought unbreakable, to the point where the lock itself was given to a convict who was a master locksmith with the offer of a pardon and money (100 British pounds, or about $2500 today, enough to easily start a new life) if it was opened. Months of trying failed. Finally, someone picked it in 1851- 4 years after that version came out, and 33 years after the first one debuted.

It fell. Knox would fall.

Walls can be climbed. Dug under. Gone around. Gone over.

A wall is a trillion dollars of waste (and my math in a previous thread pegged it quite a bit higher).

a border wall is pointless, the mexicans have long shown them selves  highly skilled at tunnel making so I will not be surprised in the least when they tunnel under it despite all efforts to stop it.   Assuming it ever gets built.
