Perhaps, but that's only because it puts you just across the river from Washington DC, a city so bad that if it didn't have all the museums and monuments, no one would ever visit.

Interesting fact:  The model of plane that crashed was a Bombardier Dash 8 Q400, which has a service ceiling (the maximum altitude at which the airplane can be expected to safely fly) of only 27,000 feet, well below the height of many Himalayan peaks.  So they got that going for them, which is nice.

It also sounds like the elevation probably had little to do with it.  Sounds to me like they had a really hard landing and ruptured a fuel tank or something.

An old Dash 8-Q-400?  I wonder if this airline was following Bombardier's updated procedures, after a spate of landing hear failures on planes about 11 years ago.

I think that's the airport where we landed in 1968, flying in a Fokker Friendship from Dhaka.  The plane goes into a steep dive and then you have landed, if all goes well.

You're more a thrillseeker than I'll ever be.  I've only seen video of the landings and that was scary enough.  There is no "missed approach, go around".  You got to make it stick.  Much respect to the pilots willing and able to run that route.

Kathmandu is quite tame. It's just too small to handle pretty much anything but turboprops.

Ack!  Gawd no.   Unless you are a first year university student or generally broke A.F..

Alcohol-wise, hmm.... from a 'Made in Canada' perspective:

Whisky
- 40 Creek Barrel Select whisky
- Collingwood Maple Finish whisky
- Crown Royal Northern Harvest

Beer - CAVEAT:  Support your local brewers!  Onward...
- pretty much anything by Mill Street, though Tank House Ale is my top of list
- Waterloo Brewery, Dark is great and their Pilsner is fine.
- shout out to Church Key brewery, as the brewery is in a small church across from a graveyard where some of my ancestors are buried (and whom would be horrified at the idea of a brewery in a church).

Heh, last time I flew in there I was sitting right over the wing, I noticed the wing was bobbing up and down a lot for how close we were to the ground and knew it was going to be a rough landing.  People were screaming and apparently a bunch of other flights had to be diverted to other nearby airports that day.

I thought it was kinda fun, but then again it's not as scary when you see it coming and know damn well the pilot knows it's coming but isn't alarmed enough to divert to a different airport.

That plane had something else in common with Bob Seger. They both had a hit with a horizontal bop.
