It's actually pretty impressive and admirable that the daughter has decided to continue to contribute to the rich cultural tapestry of New Orleans rather than try to find a way out of poverty. It's really putting the community before any desire to create generational wealth, and it's what keeps our cities so much better to live in than bland suburbia.

Good on her for walking in her dad's shoes.

Okra. Excuse me while I shudder a bit.

That's not too shabby a truck. I think we're not looking at someone stuck in poverty. More like filling a gap in food deserts. If she is geared up to take food stamps, she's golden.

Well, I wouldn't be surprised that Mr and now Mrs Okra made a few hundred dollars a day. Every time he passed by whatever jobsite I'm working on, Mr Okra would always drive away with at least my $20.

/born and raised in greater new orleans area. :)

While okra is good in gumbo, the best application is always deep fried okra. Crispydeep fried okra.

my mother really prefers okra gumbo but I just cannot get past that slimy consistency.  I rather like the flavor but damn that slime just doesn't work for me.

Not a single farking picture of Mr. Okra? Oh wait, I forgot what imaginary holiday it was supposed to be today. This is just about the poor women that have to make do on their own.

Have taken to using the boxed, whole pod, deep fried product, rough crushed by hand and tossed in Cuisinart.  Use the powder like any other flavor enhancer/condiment when serving most any prep of pork. Crushed bacon & okra powder on cauliflower, etc.

Enough time and thin slice half-frozen whole pods dredged in yellow/white cornmeal, deep fried and drained.  Gave up on my gummy gumbos at request of our daughters.

For slime (thickening agent), May Apple is the snottiest (YMMV).

When I lived in the DC area, they would occasionally do stories about the few produce vendors who still used a horse and cart in the inner-city to sell groceries.  There was actually a long tradition in Baltimore (large cities on the entire east coast actually) of this practice and the cart merchants were known for some reason as "Arrabers."

One of the plots/episodes of the Wire featured an Arraber accused of murder.

During the depression my step-dad was a kid but got a job (on commission) along with his brothers pulling a couple of carts to sell watermelons.  He told me how his brothers and him had a jingle they would sort of sing to announce their presence.  For some reason I still remember it to this day.

Watermelon, Watermelon
Fresh and fine
Tastes so good in the summertime
Eat the meat and preserve the rind
Watermelon!

Okra, the slimiest of all the vegetables.

But to quote Bugs Bunny:

There isn't much meat on them. They're kinda dry, too. But I love em! I love em! I love em! I love em! (yells) Lunch time!
