It's not that difficult to vanish, I understand, if you're serious about not being found.

Even if he's still alive I doubt he'll be heard of again, barring an act of Fark-headline-level stupidity, reward or no reward.

Having lived in the Emory/CDC area for a number of years, I can almost assure you he's still stuck in traffic.

All I'm saying is he disappears, then some random Russian spy ends up poisoned with a nerve agent.  Seems like some super double secret agent stuff right there.

So this article about a missing person doesn't include a picture of the missing person but links to another article about the same missing person that also doesn't have a picture of the missing person but does contain a short 30 second video that also doesn't show a picture of the the missing person but instead shows stock footage of flashing police lights and Atlanta traffic.

Epidemiologists would be more concerned with infectious diseases and the like. Biotech and chemical engineers would be more apt to mess with neurotoxins.

/I'm observant, that's why they sent me

My money is still on suicide. He either drown himself or ended up in the river which is why his body has not been found nearby. I would have checked down river.

Hazmat training is roughly the same though.  Besides you can't have the "Anthrax guy" disappearing and then people contracting "Anthrax" that's just too obvious.  Even John Grisham makes it a little more complicated.

/the conspiracy deepens

Crime Stoppers said the money is for information "that points to criminal activity in the disappearance." ... Police said there's no evidence of foul play

So Crime Stoppers offered a reward they fully expect not to have to pay out even if somebody finds the guy's body.

I'm in Atlanta for a couple weeks.  I brought this up with the group I'm in training with (all locals but me). They had no idea what a I was talking about.  Non of them even knew there was a CDC location in Atlanta.

I went deer hunting on some private land one day (4k acres and I had permission for the season). I drove my truck in about 1/3 of the way to where I would hunt then walked the rest of the way about 2 hours before sunrise. I didn't see anything worth shooting so I walked back to my truck about 10 AM. That's when I found the hole. It was a square hole about 4'x4'  with a few old boards partially covering it. It may have been an old well or a mine shaft. It was just there in the woods with no warning sign at all. I picked up a short log and dropped it in. I counted, "one one-thousand, two one-thousand, three one-thousand, four one-thousand, five one-th" THUMP! It took almost 5 seconds for that log to hit the bottom. My first thought was how lucky I was that I didn't find it walking in in the dark. There was no way anyone would have found me. It would have been a mystery. His truck was found in the woods and he was never seen again. I returned the next day and put 3 rows of caution tape in the trees around it. I always think of it when I hear a story of a strange disappearance.

Here's the thing. When you take a whole bunch of biological samples, you don't know what they produce. The same plant/animal/bacteria may produce substantially different things when subjected to different environments. You might find a symbiotic bacteria that happens to be making a great compound to defend itself against other bacteria because it's in a hostile environment. But you won't know until you test it. maybe only the ones in a certain area/temperature/altitude make a good drug and others make a bad drug.
You usually do a field assay first looking for a quick hit on whatever is hot with the pharmaceuticals. Then it all gets frozen and it may be decades of retesting until you find out that thing makes something useful you haven't tested it for, yet.
