It won't happen right away.. there's an election in a few weeks. This is the generous time where political dissidents are locked up instead of shot. The really unlucky ones are sent to a gulag.

And, they're confusing 'anger at' with 'fear of'...

And if Trump had signed off on the Congressionally approved Russian sanctions package some people might have actually demanded Putin face a legitimate challenger instead of Paris Hilton's commie cousin.

The two are semi-interchangeable.  A lot of -phobia words are now officially defined as "aversion to, hatred of, or fear of..." things.

I take no stance on whether this is a good thing.

It's all theater over there -- managed democracy. It's not the old days. You send out a rabble-rouser to gain a little following by saying some bold and inciting things, then have him slowly come around to the opinion of the state, bringing his previous disgruntled following with him.

I've read discussions online about using "homomisia" and "islamomisia" for this reason. I have to say, "phobia" always struck me wrong on a number of counts. A phobia is specifically a baseless, irrational fear, and what people are generally trying to convey is a bias against or hatred of something.

Russia bought itself 50 years of enmity with the West because of Crimea. Even Trump can't like that he owes his spot to Putin, and foreign policy-minded Democrats have to burnat their humiliation. When Putin dies, I hope President Chelsea annexes Kamchatka, because, after all, that is what you do when your neighbor falls into crisis. That is the precedent Putin has set, and I hope we hold Russia to it.

I'd be ok with taxpayers funding the move of her entire house to the newly-US Kamchatka-Siberia border, so she can keep her watchful eye.

I think he's saying that phobia is defined as saying "I hate the color green and I have no idea why."

Now someone's reasons for hating gays or muslims might be stupid, lacking even a mote of thought, utterly hypocritical, pointless, and fractally wrong, but they claim to have a reason.

Then please explain why such a strong macho man is afraid  of Pussy Riot ?
Or why they have not come around, but instead have done some time in places that are not so nice.....

The answer is- not all Russians like what is happening, and many are trying to make a f*cking difference, and we should all hope that they succeed in changing the kleptocracy that they have into something at least into something other than a gas station with a flag ruled by oligarchs.
Russia did follow Clarkes' work and was in space before us. And now all they do is sell weapons, hack and drill baby drill!

My thing with "phobia" is that people don't beat up on gays or Muslims because they fear them, they do it because they hate them. Maybe their hate is a manifestation of their fear in some cases, but there's no way to know that, at least not universally. "Phobia" makes it sound like the Nazis were afraid of the Jews.

For what it's worth, -misia as a suffix isn't very good. You could use it as a prefix miso- like misophonia or misogyny or something. Maybe look for something in Latin instead of Greek. I don't think it works in Greek. We use -phobia here (homophobia etc) and it means a visceral revulsion, not necessarily a 'fear' as in feeling fright. For that we use tromo- anyway (like how you say terrorist instead of phobist).

/probably didn't help, sorry

If you don't agree, locate a counter example. I submit that it will be very difficult to find one.
