Sure, let's build an international megacity with an extrajudicial system in the middle of the hottest, most volatile region of the world. Sounds good. I'm sure nothing will come of it, like the massive human trafficking that went into building Dubai.

/could think of much better things to do with 630 billion dollars

The megacity will have its own judicial system separate from the strict Saudi Arabia - designed to attract international investors

Translation: Saudi hates infidels and nobody wants to live under Saudi rule.  But we have to make the billionaires feel welcome all the same.

If you build it, he will NEOM.

I wouldn't bother building it.  The Sovs will destroy it in the Apocalypse War.

As long as they're leaving out Rob Schneider, I'm cool with it.

It's a hot climate with endless beach front and no chance of cyclones or other natural disasters. As long as they serve booze, it sounds like a great idea. Tourism is about your only option there, so may as well put the land to use.

How about they help Qatar with air conditioning (as promised) for the 2022 World Cup?

Hmm well this explains the talk around the office I have been hearing about megadevelopment by SA.

Just wait till they see MegaCity One.

Why not build massive solar arrays and infrastructure to supply cheap energy to the world to maintain their economy post-oil?

FTFA:

The megacity will have its own judicial system separate from the strict Saudi Arabia - designed to attract international investors. Its industries will focus on energy, water, biotechnology, food, advanced manufacturing and tourism.

You got to love the hypocrisy.

They force their own people to live under theocratic rule, but they know that's bad for business, so they create a region completely divorced from it a la Dubai. The real question is will they be as flexible as Dubai when it comes to embracing of western culture and and allowing people to buy alcohol everywhere (at this point Dubai is pretty much midtown Manhattan).

Why not cut out the middle man and just use the country that SA gets their slav- er, workers from?

I have a hard time getting worked up about any hypocrisy,  here. Care to elaborate?

For the minority with money.

Not so much for the virtual slaves.

Sounds like Saudi Arabia is jealous of the United Arab Emirates and in particular Dubai and wants to get into some of that sweet plutocrat money laundering and hub of organized crime action.  The laws need to let the rich have their alcohol, prostitutes, and human trafficking in order to attract investors.

Clearly, it's been a long train runnin', with them growin' a little each day.  They've been takin' it to the streets and expanding minute by minute.  It won't be right until the Dubai brothers reach their goal, but it's getting closer every day.

Between Bahrain, Dubai and now NEOM, it appears that Allah's eyesight is getting worse and worse.

That 1990 picture looks odd.

OK, I guess they were already planning for the future. But still, it looks odd to not put buildings next to each other. Even all other "artificial" cities I've seen, still put stuff next to each other, rather than just randomly around.

Are you kidding me? The Saudis fight a running battle with their own homegrown terrorists.

Why don't they use all the money to help the Palestinians? Heck, with all that dough they could practically build a new state for them.

I'm sure this will move forward as planned with no setbacks whatsoever, and certainly won't be relegated to an entry on a Wikipedia page about unbuilt megacities.

Living under the Judge-system in Mega-City One would suck, but at least stuff like radical Islamic Terrorism, Alex Jones- like rabble rousers, PETA, Antifa and Neo-Nazis would be stomped on with extreme prejudice...
