We have two dogs (both are rescues). Our little Yorkie has the couch were he lets me sit next to him. our medium sized Beagle/American Bull dog had no place to sit, so we got him an old chair and he loves it.

Aww the good doggies.

I work in a hospital and yesterday we had one of the pets as therapy dogs come in. Such a little cutiepie. It would make my day if I was stuck in a hospital bed.

Unwanted dogs are especially sad because they are a species specifically genetically engineered by us, to need us. It's heartbreaking that we created them only to fail them.

But fark that, I'm a cat person. Cats never maul anybody to death but everybody hates them just for being independent instead of needy.

I've taken my German shepherd/golden to the old folks home nearby, and a quick brush of the teeth and a check of the paws and he's good to go.  He's even licked an elderly face occasionally.  Nobody got sick.

A cat will tuck into your dead body before it's cold.
A dog will either lie next to you quietly or start barking and whining.  They won't quietly begin eating you.

Many dogs and cats are more sanitary than a lot of people, including those in hospitals. And the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages for both the humans and pets.

Cats aren't evil.  They're either true neutral or chaotic neutral, depending on how crazy it is.

Respiratory therapist here - my wife had surgery and had to sit in one of our "crappy hospital beds" for 2-3 days , the highlight of the day for her was when I went home every evening and got our dog.  I brought him in a back door that was close to her room.  I couldn't tell who was happier wife or dog.

Thank you for this. I am stuck in a nursing home temporarily, and the pet visits are about the only thing that is keeping me sane. When I get out I am thinking of volunteering at the Humane Society so they can bring pets for a visit more often.

I know it's hard to believe, but outside of shiathole countries there are places were people actually keep dogs and cats indoors *gasp* well groomed, free from parasites and disease and have them *shocked face* on their furniture. I know it's hard to fathom, but as someone who is from a third world shiathole, it took a while for me to accept dogs and cats as clean.

tbh I pet animals all over the world, including very poor countries, and aside from a single flea bite nothing bad has ever happened to me.

I dont believe them about each dog sticking to one chair . that is not remotely how dogs work.

That said, I'm not sure how sanitation is a huge concern to begin with. They were donated, aka about to be tossed. If the chairs get fleas set them on a bonfire or powder and toss them, theyre basically disposable

Just in case there's someone reading here who hesitates to get a dog because they 'don't want them on the furniture'... it is possible to train dogs to not climb up on things.   I know because my lab stays on the floor or his own bed. (loves his cozy spots under a bed or table - nearby but not underfoot)

/ only exception? if someone wants all 60 lbs of him on their lap - Guinness still remembers lap sitting as a pup and will cheerfully clamber up into someone's lap if they invite him by patting their lap whilst facing him.
//  Great lol-worthy photo op b/c once up he circles and lays down and then the person (hereafter referred to as 'the victim'...) can't get up out of the laz-e-boy until one of us tells our sweet doggie to hop on down.

It seemed that each dog has its cage, and each cage has its chair. They stick with their chairs because it's that or the floor.

My couch surfer upthread wasn't allowed on the furniture for his first four-five years. Eventually we wanted him up there for pettings and snuggles but even three (or so) years on from that he still "asks permission" most of the time if someone is already on the couch.

He'll walk up and put his chin on the seat cushin and give you the eyes. Yes it's as adorable as it sounds.

It's not the "independence," it's the aloofness. Cats, while cool in their own way, only do affection on their own terms. More like a cold-hearted spouse than a buddy to hang out with. But sure, people are averse to them because they're so self-sufficient. And no, housecats don't "maul;" they just destroy your furniture and break flesh with their claws because you have the audacity to want something from the kitchen while it's sitting in your lap on the couch.

You have your opinion and I have mine.

60lbs?  Still a puppy?

/we had newfies for decades, several thought that they were lap dogs
//150#+ of snuggling drool does not a comfortable evening make... until they're gone & you'd give a lot to do it again
///current 175# mastiff would rather 'sneak' into bed at 3am when I have no leverage to pitch him back out....sigh (it's not so much the 'sneaking' but the 'turn around 3 times before flopping down' that's the problem)

There's a lot of emphasis on getting them rehomed here though, as apparently they're harder to rehome. So emails and nice stories go round quite frequently.

I've been a waiter at an outdoor cafe before. Pooches everywhere! I'd go behind the line and grab a nice handful of hand-crumbled, fresh bacon (I had a deal with the cold line to cook and crumble extra before I left). Anyway, the bacon was in my front apron pocket. I'd put it on little b&b dishes for them.

Neighborhood dogs used to ask for me by name. "Yeah, that guy Alan is cool and all, but can we sit in Alex's section?"
