London sells "Underground" things too. Hats that say, "Mind The Gap" and whatnot. For some people, maybe more for tourists then locals, this stuff can be treated like souvenirs. I see nothing wrong with this and hope they do well.

They did the same in Berlin a few years back - they had men's boxers with "Krumme Lanke" ("Crooked Lance") and "Rohrdamm" ("Pipe Embankment") and women's underwear with "Gleisdreieck" ("Track Triangle") and "Jungfernheide" ("Maiden's Heath"). They sold out in days.

Not even close, it's in the top 3 and until the last decade or so I put it ahead of NY because while it wasn't quite as comprehensive it was WAY cleaner and way safer.

Was visiting DC last weekend and walked up to that station since it was the closest to the Lincoln Memorial. The station is also right there at the campus of George Washington University. That probably makes it a good risk because we all know that college students are thrifty with money and not at all prone to buying humorous items on a whim.

We have a bingo!  The same people who insist on wearing a T-shirt identifying where they're from when they visit DC will happily purchase some swag to showoff they went to DC when they return home.  The stuff doesn't look awful like most stuff for tourists.

I typically only ride during rush hour to and from work.  I've had one delay over 20 minutes since they finished the massive repair work.  I can imagine it's chaos when they have huge events.

Lived in the DC Metro area a few times, 1990-1996 and from 2000 to 2004. I can count the number of times I used Metro. (5)

Because I rather train it in then drive in a city where the streets make no sense. I prefer a grid layout like NYC compared to the criss-cross diagonal layout the Freemason's developed for DC. What the heck were they thinking?

I'm a believer in the theory that the diagonal avenues radiating out from circles were designed so that in
the event of an insurrection Federal troops could set up cannon and fire at crowds more easily, but I've
not actually researched this as being an actual concern when the city was designed.

That's during a historic event, with a truly massive amount of people all concentrated downtown. Any mass transit system is going to struggle during historic marches and protests like that. That's just common sense. You can't design your mass transit system around events like that. It would cost an amount we as a society are not willing to pay, and 90% of it's capacity would go utterly wasted 99.9% of the time, while costing a spectacular amount more in utilities and upkeep.

I love the metro system, and take it whenever I can. When events like that happen you plan around them. That's just part of living in a city like DC which attracts that sort of thing. I think it's part of the charm to see history being made.
