I had hopes it was a story about Ted Cruz getting kicked repeatedly in his groin.

Wrong Cruz

2018-03-08 05:35:10 AM
It's too damn early to cause me this sort of tragic letdown, subby.

A) Yay historical unsolved mystery being resolved!
2) Yay Ted Cruz getting the Richard Spencer Treatment!
III) Nikolas Cruz being charged.

2018-03-08 05:35:17 AM
If he wounded 16, then why is he charged with 17 counts of attempted murder?
Once more for good luck or did he miss only one shot?

I'm not sure, would it count if he attempted to kill someone twice, like shot them once, then came back and shot them again?

Go for the death penalty. Make this little farker squirm under the limelight, because it's clear that now that he realizes what he's done he doesn't want to be seen at all.

Make him suffer through the whole damn process. And then lock him up in a tiny cell where he'll never see sunlight again for at least the next 10 years before he's strapped to a gurney and put to death with whatever pharmaceutical company's botched mixture FL can get its hands on by the time his appeals are done.

As fine as that would be, it could be an economically sound choice to simply accept life without anything but prison forever rather than lock the courts for months into a trial, and all the extra costs that the death penalty leads to in the years to come.

Simply put: having him imprisoned for life could be a vastly cheaper choice, and then those resources that you save can be spent on things that can make the lives of those who live better, rather than spend lots of money on impotent vengeful anger.

You sound like a well adjusted individual who is totally stable and didn't skip class on the day we covered the ideals of The Enlightenment.

I agree he should get the earth penalty, but that's just to remove the incurable from society. Reveling in his pain, I suspect, is the type of behavior that feeds into a societal habit of dehumanizing everyone and makes us all more vulnerable in the long term. The reason his acts are terrible stem from an inability to treat others with basic dignity. I'm unconvinced that locking someone up solely for the purpose of torture makes us much better.

It's not about making us better, it's about setting an example for the next unhinged maniac. Of all of the mass shootings in the past decade (including Giffords), only 4 have lived to serve trial. When it starts happening more and more that these guys spend months being humiliated for the whole country to see and then spend thousands of days in a row in a tiny little concrete box before finally strapped to a gurney and turfed of their mortal coil in one of the most undignified ways possible, maybe they'll start thinking twice before going on their own little spree.

Nah - there's an ending to that - he can see an end to his fate -  and in the meantime fame, news, "look at me" kind of stuff. Just lock him up and throw away the key. He needs to die in prison, but keep alive his hope for a reprieve and release. I can't think of a better way to make him suffer.

Not generally a fan of revenge, but this "plead guilty to avoid a death sentence" speaks volumes.

The thing is, I don't think that those would really be deterrents for the next mass shooter.  Each one is obviously seriously farked in the head, and is operating in a different reality from the rest of us.  No "sane" person is going to think that anything besides either death or lifelong imprisonment will follow such despicable actions in the first place.  For some, what we see as humiliation is actually the recognition and fame that they were seeking.  Because there are so few survivors to face justice, we really need to take the learning opportunity while we can to figure out what may actually work.

I'm actually of the mind that we shouldn't be publicizing the names of shooters over and over again after these tragedies.  I mean, CNN had a whole story based on the corrections officers' log book entries while they sat on his ongoing suicide watch.  That serves no purpose other than keeping his name in the headlines.

TL;DR- we can't use the rules of rational, non-sociopathic thinking when we speculate what may or may not be motivators and deterrents for people who commit these types of crimes.

It obviously wasn't a deterrent here - why would he be trying to bargain a guilty plea for escaping a death penalty?

Here is a link for an interesting development concerning a local school shooting from 2009.  Check out the embedded link to the pdf of the shooters letter written before he went to school.

https://m.timesunion.com/news/article/NY-school-shooter-supports-gun-control-praises-12723420.php#photo-15116941

Seems like this guy was out for revenge, and didn't care about the consequences at the time.  From the letter, it appears he was ready to die that day.  So, again, different shooters have different motivators and possible deterrets.

We need to look at solutions that will affect more than just the very few who may possibly care about consequences.

Killing someone for killing someone else makes you no f*cking better than they are. Capital punishment is a brutal, outmoded and savage obscenity, and I can't believe how many otherwise civilized people on Fark jump up and down screaming for blood when something like this happens. Our society is what creates these monsters. If you don't want monsters, don't allow the society that breeds them. I hate it when things like this get so buried in white noise that they need to be spelled out like it's kindergarten, for f*ck sake. It's like public masturbation with self-righteousness-flavored lube around here.

doubled99: FixedThatForYou: Killing someone for killing someone else makes you no f*cking better than they are.

Your opinion is childlike. Capital punishment is sane and rational. And it's often the closest thing to justice

For barbarians, sure.

Your argument is very childlike.
It amounts to "Nuh uh!!! I'm right, you're not!"

Uh...no. That's your argument. Take some time to think and come back...

orbister: Inebriated Bolshevik Muppet: Go for the death penalty. Make this little farker squirm under the limelight, because it's clear that now that he realizes what he's done he doesn't want to be seen at all.

Make him suffer through the whole damn process.... [Snip]

Or behave like a civilised nation. Your choice.

Civilised

'found the Britton.

Seriously, though... I'm just about as far left as it gets without getting to the fringe, and even I would rather they execute this waste of a person. He will never contribute to society. There's no rehabilitation for this. I'd rather not pay for his food, shelter, and entertainment for the next 50-70 years. I'd rather not let him read fan mail or have sicko groupies.

And they should have executed Manson, too. Some people are beyond redemption and become a negative symbol or an icon of hate if we allow them to go on. Manson did the world no good in prison all that time. Cruz won't either.

ol' gormsby: I can't think of a better way to make him suffer.

There is no need to make him suffer, and every reason not to do so. For crying out America, you're supposed to be part of the civilised world and you even have something in your constitution about cruel and unusual punishment. You've caught the guy; there is no need to torture him.

It's Briton, you knob. And I spell civilised with an 's' because that's how I learned it at Montessori school in the '70s. Also colour, favour, endeavour, etc. Noah Webster was the Donald Trump of lexicographers, and reintroducing literacy is the first step toward making a civilised nation of this country.
And how do you know he's not Canadian?

Does it worry you at all that no other developed democracy in the world shares your opinion?
