Ahhh, because if kids find out Easter Bunny is fake, and Santa is fake, and toothfairy is fake, then how will they accept their god as real?

Here I've always felt that those 'little happy lies' most people tell their kids were specifically to condition them at a young age to believe in things which have no empirical evidence of their existence.

Which kind of misses the point about Pratchett, but that's typical for disciples.

Highlights the fact that the CAS in Ontario needs to have oversite. There are numerous accounts of similar issues especially of parents looking to adopt who get refused because if some social workers stupid ideas.
An example was one couple who were refused because they didn't have a kitchen table. The SW believed it didn't encourage family time.
A group called adopt4life came together because of this.

""There is sufficient evidence to assert that the Baars did, indeed, attempt to preserve the children's enjoyment of the holidays, even of they were not able, pursuant to their religious beliefs, to positively perpetuate the existence of the fictitious characters that are associated with those holidays," Goodman wrote."

So the Baars belief in fictitious characters prevented them from positively perpetuating the existence of other fictitious characters?

Ok then.

Most of the attacks on religions here - and in the real world - come from people who believe in one or them.

You can still do all of the holiday crap without pretending it's real. Just tell the kids that it's a story / game / tradition / whatever. They will play along to get the toys and candy.

I'm in the mindset that the kids really do know they're not real and are, in fact, playing along.  Then there are years where they think if they don't play along, they won't get presents and candy.  Finally, when they understand that they will get presents and candy either way, they are more vocal about not believing.  Parents then think THAT is the time when they stop believing, but it actually happened several years earlier or if at all

I kinda figured Santa wasn't real (or at least no longer living) as our church had St Nicholas as a patron saint.  Once you find out he died in the 4th Century, the cat's kinda out of the bag.

I went with the charade for a couple years after that, because I didn't want to hurt my grandmother's feelings if she mentioned it.  Also I was afraid if I said anything, my parents might stop getting me toys and buy me boring stuff like socks and underwear like they got for themselves.
I seem to recall I didn't feel lied to by my parents, it was just a fun thing we did when I was little.  You won't warp your kids if you have them believe in Santa, or not.

Televison and their friends will do that for you.

My maternal grandparents were fundamentalists (but not the modern sort) who thought that the Easter Bunny, Santa, Christmas trees, and lots of other stuff were paganism. My mother was for all practical purposes an atheist, but when I was growing up, Christmas was celebrated, just without a tree or deceit about where gifts came from. I rather think it's healthier for a child to know that gifts come from the love and hard work of your parents and not from a magical entity that has infinite resources.

Kids are already conditioned to believe anything. Those are the factory settings.

I have serious doubts any time:
(a) Only one side of a case is legally allowed to speak about it, and
(b) That one side is made up of conservative, religious people.
It looks like foster parents in Ontario have a responsibility to respect the religious beliefs and cultural values of the kids' biological families, and I would assume that this falls under "cultural values."

While the Easter Bunny might seem like a trivial example of it, it's not a great indicator that foster families would in the future be willing to, say, respect First Nations/Native cultural values of any child placed with them.

2018-03-07 07:06:29 PM
Isn't there a huge shortage of decent foster parents, and isn't there not actually a farking requirement to teach your biological kids the Easter bunny is real?

But, nah, let's fark over both these foster parents and the kids they would have taken care of.  Let's drag the former through the courts, and send the latter back to whichever set of meth-addicted assholes didn't take care of them in the first place.

We shouldn't have foster homes.  Put all the kids in military training camp.  Drill them into conformity and to be a killing machine.  Make parents actualy fear being bad parents.  Death of parents can't be helped, but even in that case send the kids to infantry training.

Yeah, kids catch on faster than adults think.

It's also time to mention some magical thinking on the part of some Farkers who were clearly clever enough to figure out the Easter Bunny wasn't real on their own but feel that somehow other people don't.

I think it's kind of a dick move for parents with warm childhood memories of Santa & the Easter Bunny to refuse their kids those fantasies out of some sense that they're more enlightened or insightful parents than their parents or grandparents were.

It's a harmless tradition that brought you joy & fun as a kid.  Pass that shiat on & don't mindfark it to death.
