(Kotaku)   The next entry in the Call of Duty franchise will be 'Black Ops IIII'. Yes, you read that right. Apparently proper use of roman numerals is not necessary in the field of covert operations   ( kotaku.com) divider line

Actually, I didn't read that right. I read it as 3.

But that probably helps subby's point.

Yup.  IIII is perfectly fine...just a little less common.

We used to have an old clock with IIII on it.

IIII is perfectly cromulent, it is subby who is wrong.
Also Black Ops, but not for this

It'd be really cool if like, as they go forward further and further into time, maybe you go really crazy with the future stuff, like having the "humans" open up a gate to Hell and you have to fight demons with plasma guns and auto-fire rocket launchers.  But I guess we're doomed to another game with space marines.  Sigh.  *sigh*

That's not a Roman numeral. That's how much you have to spend per week in microtransactions in order to remain competitive. Activision just hoped to avoid the Battlegrounds controversy by doing some truth in advertising.

I'd heard that was because IIII balances out VIII on the opposite side of the clock better than IV does. It was a design decision.

My mom bought me a clock like that. It has mixed roman numerals and arabic numerals, but the fourth numeral is IIII instead of IV or 4 for some damned reason.

I remember seeing IIII on a clock as well, but as part of a puzzle. The puzzles goes that a clock was dropped and shattered into 4(?) pieces in such a way that the numbers on each piece added up to the same amount. I guess they needed IIII instead of IV for the puzzle to work.

It's a purely aesthetic thing to balance out VIII on the other side.

Maybe they don't like to associate IV with Cod because it's so clear that the franchise needs an IV bag, if not an entire ICU.

I read, and want to believe, that it means that whole clock face could be cast from just one mold. I'll admit I've forgotten how thats meant to work though.

I believe it's more than just aesthetics ... IIII for IV,  VIIII for IX, XXXX for XL, LXXXX for XC, CCCC for CD    and  DCCCC for CM were all accepted forms.

I guess nobody knows. I just read about Roman sundials (before clocks) having IIII also because IV are the first two letters of IVPITER -- Jupiter -- a god. Others claim it was a Louis XIV thing (or XIIII, I guess), who thought IIII looked better.

So, tl;dr -- nobody knows.

The IW of today is not the IW of the old days.

I came here to mention clocks. They did that to avoid confussion since IV, V, and VI would be upside down.

There's also the theory that it divides the click into thirds:
the ones with only I
the ones with V
the ones with C

God what kind of clock would have C?

IIII was correct back in the day (iirc, before 1600s). None of this putting sissy numerals before big burly, sweaty roman. Uh, what was i saying?
Anyway none of those tortured rules about being able to put smaller numerals ahead of larger ones as long as they aren't more than two away on the list.
XC OK BUT VC isn't.
And yes, there is a Roman numeral for 1/2. It is s and i had to teach a pharmacy calculating class with a section on Roman numerals.  Never again.

There is no "proper" way to do Roman numerals. There never has been. You can do it however you want to do it.

That said, how many people even want to play "Call of Duty" anymore? Didn't PUBG and Fortnite basically take over the FPS market? Call of Duty is obsolete, I would think.

2018-03-07 06:40:02 PM
But we've heard from two people familiar with the game's development that the next Call of Duty is indeed a fourth Blops, to be developed by Treyarch, the studio behind the first three Black Ops games.

Blops is the word I use when you're having a dump, and you trump too hard and the poo projectiles all over the back wall of the toilet bowl.

It's onomatopoeic.
