Army developers tell Warrior Maven the new armored vehicle is expected to change land war by outmatching Russian equivalents

Just consistently getting food and fuel to your tanks allows you to outmatch Russian equivalents.

I think that's the point.  We don't see much (if any) massive armored battles anymore, so investing in a new main battle tank would be unnecessary.  Lightweight air-portable infantry support vehicles, on the other hand, make way more sense.

I don't think ground-vase warfare will be much use against a tank. YMMV.

If the US is going to to win a war with Russia it needs to do things that have never been done before. That means A fast-moving battalion of light tanks that strike like lightning across the battlefield. A kind of lightning war, if you will.

I'm sure this will end up being an expensive boondoggle, but having said that technology has changed just a weee bit in the last two decades and things that weren't possible before (metal foam/ceramic armors) might just make some of those goals achievable now.

I wish there was some sports-terminology we could use to make the concept easier to grasp.  Sort of like how in American football, when a bunch of defenders rush the quarterback.  Hmmmm...

Didn't I see this thing  in Twilight: 2000 twenty-five years ago?

For lighter weight vehicles, recoil limitations are overcome by incorporating the larger caliber rarefaction wave gun technology while providing guided, stabilized LOS, course-corrected LOS, and beyond LOS accuracy."

I thoghut that was limited to reclaimed WWII battleships.

The last major armor on armor battle was 73 Easting in Kuwait.....and we plunked them off like targets in a shooting gallery.

So yeah, Russia focused on "okay, how do we outmaneuver and neutralize them instead of going toe to toe?"

A troop transport that can't carry troops, a reconnaissance vehicle that's too conspicuous to do reconnaissance, and a quasi-tank that has less armor than a snowblower, but has enough ammo to take out half of D.C.

Two decades?

The M-1 Abrams was designed in the 70's and entered service in 1980.

Canada was set to scrap all the tanks and go entirely with wheeled armoured vehicles and then Afghanistan happened and we realized that sometimes you need what a tank can do and then the government went shopping for newer tanks. A light tank seems kind of like a niche vehicle for the times when a full tank is too much but a wheeled fighting vehicle can't quite handle the terrain...basically something only a bloated military budget can justify.

2018-03-07 08:46:13 AM
We got away from the light/medium/heavy tank paradigm in favor of the MBT in what, the 60s? Why do they think we need a light infantry tank?

If you want something light, quick and deadly, take a APC chassis, fit it with a computer-targeted rapid-firing mortar, and give it a portable integrated aerial drone for target designation and scouting. Kill from over the hill. Relocate rapidly as needed.

Tanks and stuff aren't really designed to kill people. I mean, nuclear missilesare designed to kill people. Conventional weapons are so relatively ineffective, they are really more like vanity projects/jobs programs.

Oh good, another military land vehicle that's completely worthless because armored engagements stopped existing decades ago.

/why would anyone care if it outperforms the Russian equivalents, because everyone's already dead before we'd be deploying armies against each other
