I'm all right with that.  Tom Cruise may be nutty, but he does action movies solid.  If it's a good script, then use Cruise.

That said...after Black Panther's success, is there any reason NOT to go with the John Stewart Green Lantern?

Non-comic book fans will think it is about a former late show comedian who is fighting for first responder health care packages with the power of will alone?

It's DC, assume they'll screw it up again

but yea, John Steward GL, would be nice

especially if they left in Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan

Tom Cruise could be Guy Gardner

I'd bet the studio wouldn't call it "The John Stewart Saga" (for that reason, and others). They'd probably go with something a bit more recognizable, like "Green Lantern Corps" (which IIRC is the working title anyway).

But yeah, they absolutely should have gone with Stewart. I guess we can hold out hope Hal bites it at the end, and his ring gets picked up by a uniformed Marine...

// or, for lulz, go all autofellatio and get Keanu to play Guy Gardner
// liked the Reynolds film, too (except the Space Fart Cloud ending)

Because John Stewart is a boring character.  There's no reason not to just cast a black guy as Hal Jordan.

Or better yet, lets switch to my personal favorite GL, the wisecracking a-hole loudmouth Guy Gardner, who would add some of the levity DC has been falling over themselves to add to their films.

Just put all of them in. It's supposed to be a damn corps after all

Show their differences through their constructs and perhaps different levels of willpower. Put them all on Oa for training. Go nuts. A good GL movie could easily be their answer to Guardians of the Galaxy

I am betting that no Green Lantern movie in the current continuity will be made.
I am guessing this is all just a big circle jerk at stunt casting to measure interest.
Warner Brothers did this sort of "cast a star" headline grabbing in the 90's and they are doing it again because they do not seem to understand how to make movies.

Sounds fine enough to me. Cruise may be a wacky thetan-lover, but he delivers solidly in pretty much everything I've ever seen him in. The dude can act. If you're skeptical just watch his character change through Edge of Tomorrow.

That said... I always thought the whole Green Lantern thing was stupid to begin with, so I really have no horse in this race.

I don't know anything about comics John Stewart.  I know Justice League cartoon John Stewart.  Maybe a little boring, but that could be fixed in the script.  That said, I think casting black Hal is good, but from a marketing standpoint, going with the "always black" characater of Stewart is more impactful.

I want them to troll and go with Simon Baz.  Black Muslim accused of terrorism Green Lantern.  The heads that would explode....

But a Guy Gardner one would be great, especially if they over time worked in his stint as a red lantern leader.

sammyk: Am I the only one completely burned it on super hero movies?

Probably?
There's a massive difference between movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and everything else. Fox is extremely hit or miss and Sony and WB are downright bad at them, but if you're not enough of a fan to distinguish between the various studios and their offerings, just go ahead and ignore them.

It's looking like WB is going to get sold piecemeal to get the Time Warner / AT&T merger to go through, and no major studio beside Disney is likely to have the cash to make twice-annual $200 million+ serialized outings, so it's entirely possible that DC movies not called Batman are going to wind up on a shelf for a while.

Disney and Comcast are bidding on Fox's entertainment assets right now. Moving Fox stuff in house would probably result in less overall super hero movies but probably a 4-per-year schedule from Marvel. No one knows what would happen if Comcast/Universal bought Fox. I have no idea if getting the gnerally not well liked X-men movies would be a drop in replacement for the classic monster movies they wanted to make into a franchise.

Sony keeps making shiat like the Emoji movie and is desperate for a flagship. If you read about what they're trying to do with Spider-Man characters, it's pretty obvious that they don't know what they're doing, but they're also not going to stop making them until there's not a drop of profit left for doing so. As

After that you get down to smaller studios like Lion's Gate, who don't have the cash to make big budget effects movies in the first place.

So if you're looking for fewer super hero movies, I'm going to say that the market is probably contracting but also that there's not really anyone stopping Disney from doing whatever the hell it wants; it can probably count on 6 or 7 $700M+ movies every year for at least the next three to five years, just between Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar and Disney Animation.

Yes, I'm being serious.

Because $cientology has its mythos of mental science versus psychologist with drugs and machines plagiarized from the Lensman Chronicles, and Green Lantern is as close as Tom is going to get to playing a Kinnison of The Galactic Patrol.

A Green Lantern movie starring Tom Cruise doesn't sound like a terrible idea to me.
The studio will just have to hire a bunch of other actors 5'5" or less to cast alongside him.

I am getting there.

I only follow the MCU stuff, and find everything else very underwhelming. And even the MCU stuff all ends the same: a fight sequence that ends in a sky beam.

His modern traits are his skills/discipline as a Marine, and his aptitude as an Architect that bleeds into his constructs. Hal is known for creating goofy shiat like a big catcher's mitt but John's constructs are described as so intricate that they may as well be the real thing.

/Rayner was an artist/graphic designer so his shiat tends to be more fantastic in nature

When I first heard TC was going to be in a Mummy remake, I predicted it was going to be a major failure.  You can multiply that by 10 if he's cast as Green Lantern.
