It's not a great movie..But the moments that are good, are REALLY good. The story is kind of dumb,
and the thing with Walter being a jerk gets worn out pretty fast..The acting is good, and that also
makes up A LOT for the story being thin. It's all the little characterizations that make it a cult classic.
It's quite quotable and the little details that are planted in it make the whole thing flesh out. It's
far from the brilliant movie that Fargo is. Rocky Horror Picture Show is stupid and silly.
But it's undeniably a cult classic too..

The article also fails to mention that even the dog Walter watches, is a Polish breed. The
Pomeranian is named for the Pomeranian Coast, in Poland. That's an over looked detail
I don't think most people caught..

I love this movie.

One of the few movies I never get bored of no matter how many times I see it.

All of the characters are well-drawn and memorable.  Even peripheral, one-scene characters like Jackie Treehorn, the cop at the police impound lot, Da Fino (the private investigator), Knox Harrington, and so on down the list.

And there just isn't a weak scene in the whole movie, start to finish.  My opinion.

There aren't many movies that I have watched dozens of times over the years and still find myself laughing out loud at them.

This is one of them, though.

Neighbors with Belushi and Aykroyd is another one.  If you haven't ever seen it, see it.

2018-03-06 02:15:47 PM
This movie falls into the same category as Pulp Fiction.  Although well cast and full of memorable moments, for some reason it just doesn't hold up over repeated watchings.

MNguy: I have never seen a bad Coen brothers movie.

When I saw "O Brother" at the theater, there were about two dozen people there, and I was pretty much the only one laughing.  It got to be where the fact that no one else was laughing was making me laugh even harder and more uncontrollably.  I do love that movie, especially the soundtrack

I love the movie but I can't watch it frequently.

2018-03-06 02:34:53 PM
I've seen every Coen brothers movie since Raising Arizona, most of them theatrically.... (Checked out Blood Simple, retroactively).... Raising Arizona is to me, their gold standard.    I remember really being turned off by Big Lebowski just thinking it was too artsy-fartsy, too metaphorical, too pretentious.

I revisited it much much later, and it did redeam itself, somewhat.    I respect it.  I don't love it.   There are still parts i don't like at all, but other parts are very well done.  I think it deserves its cult status, specifically because of The Dude.  He is a character who doesn't exist often in film, but needs to be represented.   I think of him, everytime i  see someone in pajamas at the grocery, which is not an unoften event.

Stupid clickbait bullshiat. Also:

One theory (which the Coen Brothers have refuted) is that Donny is actually just a figment of Walter's imagination. This apparently became popular among fans who questioned why The Dude never interacts with Donny.

What? One of my favorite scenes in the movie is the Dude's exasperated "thanks Donny" when he informs him his phone's ringing.

Coens as writers and/or directors list from Wikipedia:
1984    Blood Simple
1986    Crimewave
1987    Raising Arizona
1990    Miller's Crossing
1991    Barton Fink
1994    The Hudsucker Proxy
1996    Fargo
1998    The Big Lebowski
1998    The Naked Man
2000    O Brother, Where Art Thou?
2001    The Man Who Wasn't There
2003    Intolerable Cruelty
2004    The Ladykillers
2006    Paris, je t'aime
2007    Chacun son cinéma
2007    No Country for Old Men
2008    Burn After Reading
2009    A Serious Man
2010    True Grit
2012    Gambit
2013    Inside Llewyn Davis
2014    Unbroken
2015    Bridge of Spies
2016    Hail, Caesar!
2017    Suburbicon

They wrote Unbroken? That book is harrowing, with stories about Japanese army atrocities in WW II.

I haven't seen most of them. I remember being underwhelmed by Miller's Crossing, but otherwise all that I have seen were top notch in my opinion.

A serious man sucked. Most of them, unlike BL are only good for a single viewing. Raising Arizona and NCfOM also being exceptions.

That's a solid list. I'd probably try to work O Brother Where Art Thou in there somewhere, but I don't know which one I'd bump. I'd also put Inside Llewyn Davis as number 6 or 7.

The ones I've watched have all been at least "good", many of them excellent.  But I haven't seen all of them - for example, their version of "The Ladykillers", which looked painful.
