How was that ever in an Elementary School? I went to a High School in Tennessee that used the Rebel as a mascot. There is no way that would have been tolerated there and that was 20 years ago. They took the confederate flags down ten years ago, finally. Elementary Schools don't even have sports. WTF?!?!

I'm not quite sure how people who threw a fit over being told they can't own human beings any longer and walking away from their country count as rebels.

But then, maybe that's how it is. Maybe the Rebel Alliance in Star Wars began when Palpatine issued an order banning slavery throughout the galaxy. His assistant and good friend  Darth Vader was once a slave, you know. They might have had a chat, like when Biden convinced Obama to change his stance on same sex marriage.

Even giving them the benefit of the doubt, that still means that playing sportsball with your school is enough to get your neck popped.  As in elementary school kids.

Not so! It's clearky a dirty Liberul Yankee being lynched in the mural, further reinforcing the fact that the grand war of secession was really about political ideology and economics and had nothing to do with slavery at all. / end sarcasm

There's a difference between history and heritage.  Rebel flags and lynchings are history and they belong in history books, not on public display and passed off as heritage.

Rival school representative is merely being strung up by his jersey not actually hanged. I can see that as the justification that the person who painted it and the school administrators for allowing it. *eye roll*

According to another news story, the mural was modified, not removed. Apparently instead of being hung, the guy is now being propelled into a tree by the force of his own flatulence. Or maybe that's a big penis drawn under him. I think we can all agree that artistically, this is a shiatty mural that looks like it was done by a marginally accomplished fourth-grade art student.

The age range for Tennessee elementary education might be from 5 to 21 years.  I think one of the talented 16-year olds in the 5th grade could have thought lynchings cool.  Keep it classy, South Cumberland.

I'm going to wait for the followup story, when we get to learn about some recent southern history....
Specifically, when this mural went up, what administrators approved the decision, and if those administrators are allowed to keep their jobs.

A sports rivalry is no excuse, because that's just stating that "Hey, we're rebels, we lynch people. We lynched our rivals back in the day, and we still "metaphorically" lynch our rivals.  Lynchers are going to lynch."  This is why we shouldn't celebrate certain aspects of southern heritage (or anyone's heritage for that matter.)  We should teach history with the aim of not repeating the worst bits of it.

Cumberland County was a Southern Unionist county.  The vast majority of the men from that county who fought in the Civil War joined Union regiments.  My family was among them.  2nd Tennessee Infantry (USA), many of whom were captured by the Rebels and sent to Andersonville Prison where they died.

Also, the replaced the flag with this:

which will absolutely not spark any menstruation jokes among the school kids.

Keep in mind for the "It's our heritage" crowd.  Appalachian East Tennessee was pro-Union during the war, just as Appalachian West Virginia broke off from the rest of it's state.  It was the wealthy land owners in West Tennessee who dragged everyone else into the war.

Confederate battle flags and hating yankees only became part of Appalachian culture once it became clear that the government wanted them to give black people the same rights, later on in 20th century.

If I remember my history, around 90 years ago, the school had a long-running blood feud with the New Zealand All Blacks.

So did my husband, and they banned the confederate flag years ago. This school is ridiculous for having that on the walls no matter the era.

You got to admit that lynching is a traditional value in the former Confederate states.

idrow: "Germany does not display Nazi symbols. This is not heritage"

A church is different than a public school which is part of the government.
Individuals who want to worship something/someone/whatever are free to do so.
That doesn't mean that the government should be endorsing any of those.
And in Germany they're legally not allowed to.
That's how heinously they look at their traitors.

I think images of lynching could be allowed at a school, but only from middle school up, and only in history books.
This is an image that supposed to inspire the children?  To have them do their best in their sports endeavors?
Wow.

The whole thing makes "sense" in it's own way, but it's also in incredibly poor taste and sends a terrible message.

I wonder what the racial makeup is of the school with the blue uniforms as opposed to the school with the bulldog mascot?  It's somewhat unlikely that their sports teams are named the Fighting Strange Fruit.
