I miss the awesome college teams from yesteryear like Georgetown and UNC the 80s, UNLV and Duke in the early 90s when players usually stayed through their junior and sometimes senior years. College hoops hasn't been as great since. Then again, who am I to tell someone not to go pro after high school and make some serious cash.

/Duke still sucks.

fark it, just go straight to the Barca/Ajax academy system. Sign 8 year olds to pro contracts.

make guaranteed contracts like a tenure system that way teams don't get screwed too bad on busts

WillofJ2: make guaranteed contracts like a tenure system that way teams don't get screwed too bad on busts

Why? If a team is stupid and drafts a bust; it is on them. Don't like drafting busts? Learn how to evaluate talent.

Also, a contract that isn't guaranteed isn't really a contract.

To be clear, it's not entirely up to him. The league and the union both have to agree to change the age limit.

I agree but the NFL manages to do it

Wadded Beef: I miss the awesome college teams from yesteryear like Georgetown and UNC the 80s, UNLV and Duke in the early 90s when players usually stayed through their junior and sometimes senior years....

My thought is this is a step to recover the era of teams that evolve and are not manufactured to build a coach's salary.

If Kobe, Dwight Howard, Darrell Dawkins, et.al. have the talent, then go make money.

Mark Cuban has proposed this. The G-League is a good start but they gotta up the pay to around $80k a season to make it worth it.

I believe that is in the best interest of the HS players (read: safety).  even the most gifted 18 year-old would still not be physically prepared for the NFL.  Even a speed position like a WR would probably get injured very fast in the NFL.

Aren't most college football players red-shirted to begin with, to get an extra year of development?

NBA and baseball doesn't have such a steep physical strength requirement.

But I agree with the Boobieser;  I enjoyed college basketball of the 80s and 90s where you could actually see quality teams grow and play better given 3-4 years of experience.

I don't like one-and-dones either;  place an age limit higher to go directly to the NBA (to force kids to at least go 3-4 years in a college program) or go directly to the G-league (stupid name, D-league was better) with a healthy salary to stop wasting everyone's time in college programs.

If you are 21 or under:  College program or G-League.  After one year in the G-league you are then eligible for the NBA Draft.

I'm not sure if I've ever said this before, but is it possible we now have a good professional sports commissioner? Silver has just been crushing it. Granted, I don't pay a hell of a lot of attention to the NBA, but I can't think of any missteps.

So far, off the top of my head...

1. Donald Sterling's scalp
2. Fines for flopping
3. Ceremonially drafting and hiring Isaiah Austin after he medically DQed from the NBA (excellent PR)
4. Working with players as opposed to working against them (ahem, Roger!)

No because sports commissioners are merely a mouthpiece for the interests of ownership, not an independent steward of the game

And no one gets credit for Donald Sterling. No one. It's not a secret he was a racist piece of shiat and the NBA put up with him just fine for decades.

I'd rather he'd address a rule change to stop hack-a-shaq.

And he was gone after Silver had been in power for about a month. While all commissioners are owners' mouthpieces, he's at least far better than Goodell, Bettman, and Selig.

Baseball has a working model.  Draft the players out of highschool.  Signing bonuses for the higher ranked ones.  Those who want to go pro head straight into the minor league; those who want to go to college can use that option, but are required to stay at least 3 years.
