(Spaceflight Now)   Stay up late for the 50th launch of a Falcon 9, as SpaceX lofts a comms satellite from Florida. Launch scheduled for 12:30 am EST, 9:30 pm on the west coast. It's a heavy bird, so first-stage recovery is iffy   ( spaceflightnow.com) divider line

As of 430pm yesterday, the recovery fleet was still in port.

HISPASAT is a heavy bird. Probably going to ditch this one.

Tonight, SpaceX dunks a brand new booster into the ocean because of heavy waves

Tomorrow, Elon Musk announces plans to found 'Windy Company,' with a mission goal of developing a global weather control device, to be used mostly for good.

The default time zone in the "live" sports threads, TV threads, is EST or EDT ...West coast time zones confuse the admins and to do both in a h/l.... Total chaos.

There will be all manner of data taken as they try a soft(ish) water landing... data worth the the core?!? maybe not unless it's also an older gen core?

Musk doesn't care about cost. He is on a "revenue stream" model he brought from silicon valley, so as long as the customers keep coming, he keeps going.

The data is gravy, and something will be learned.

It's just a different ROI.

Falcon looks like the 1960s science fiction idea of what a 21st century rocket should look like. And watching the side boosters from the Falcon Heavy land side by side was better than science fiction.

czetie: Falcon looks like the 1960s science fiction idea of what a 21st century rocket should look like. And watching the side boosters from the Falcon Heavy land side by side was better than science fiction.

I still can't figure out of that was working gracefully with physics (they flew to the same place, left at the same time, and flew back the same way, so yeah, they _should_ land in sync) or beating physics violently into submission (because HOW MANY variables could throw the timing off by a noticeable amount?)

Whichever it was, that moment was the true, "Am I SEEING this?!" moment from that launch.

Im a couple of hours from the Cape.  Im to young to have seen any of the pre-shuttle launches but have seen plenty of shuttle launches (RIP Challenger crew) and other various rockets.  Closest Ive been to a launch was fishing off the Port Canaveral Pier when one went up.  That was farking cool.
