On 4800 audience reviews vs 67,000.  Give it time, it'll all shake out.

2018-03-04 12:39:03 PM
I will totally see this once it hits free streaming.

2018-03-04 12:49:59 PM
Yeah well the audience are morons. "Movie critics" aren't much better.

2018-03-04 12:55:31 PM
If you add both critic and audience you get 100% fresh!

/Of course you get 176%  with BP

2018-03-04 01:07:13 PM
So you're trying to say it's a shiat movie that skates by because [reasons] ?

2018-03-04 02:53:11 PM
Death Wish is a movie that will only be seen in theaters by the kind of people who want to see Death Wish-type entertainment. Of course they're going to like it.

2018-03-04 02:57:26 PM
Sounds like the sort of Hollywood tripe that encourages violent and irrational fantasies of Good Guys with Guns shooting up bad guys with guns. Hollywood should get a ratings system to warn people about things like that.

It sounds like the same crap we've seen a thousand times before and I don't just mean the original Death Wish and its sequels. Revenge flicks are a whole sub-genre of crap. They were biggest in the 1970s but there are modern ones like Taken and Kill Bill. This movie is very unnecessary especially since Bruce Willis has been phoning it in for about the last 20 years.

Honestly, the critics are pretty good, when they reinforce my opinion of movies and games that I personally identify with.

Like, the example I would give is BioShock Infinite, I wasn't sure whether to like the film, but once the critics gave it universal acclaim according to MetaCritic, then I knew I had to buy the life-size pillow with Elizabeth on the front.

Elizabeth is my favorite spin-off character from Five Nights at Freddy's.  I want to marry her.

2018-03-04 03:50:03 PM
So is this sort of like Falling Down or God Bless America?  I'll have to admit God Bless America was enjoyable in a certain cathartic sense.

Payback

Which means absolutely dick since there were groups loudly proclaiming that they were going to game Black Panther's audience score before it came out, with suggestions that they'd already done it with other movies. Whether or not it actually happened, the Rotten Tomatoes audience score is beyond useless now.

So, here's a question. The violent revenge flick has been a go-to relatively successful trope for decades. We have no shortage of horrible violent crimes in the country for which one might want revenge. Why don't we not see more real life examples of people going nuts on the perpetrators?

2018-03-04 03:57:36 PM
I think a lot of people actively want to see a movie when the main criticisms of it are that it's 'problematic'.  Doesn't do anything for me, but I think most of us know a few guys, and they're pretty much all guys, who want to be the Willis character in this movie.

Oh Jesus, thank you for posting this.  If my mom says I can have more than three, I know where to get another.

This movie will be adored by the same people who say violent movies cause school shootings.

At the risk of turning the fan reaction to the movie into another Ghost Busters remake, I think casting someone like Krysten Ritter as the avenging angel would have made the movie more interesting.  The previews made it look like they played it safe.

Are their any AR-15s in it?

Well that'd be at least something different. Kill Bill was like 15 years ago.

What the fark is wrong with Boondock Saint? I like that movie.
I don't get the headline.

Pathetic twats.

Hell, it just occurred to me with all the talk about Black Panther.

Cast Martin Freeman in the new Death Wish as a gormless Brit banker or accountant living in New York whose family get tortured and murdered.  Who then descends into violence and murder and madness as he throws away every natural instinct he has to lash out and get revenge on those who took away all he loved.

I would watch that if it was relatively competently made.

For what it's worth, I just had to cancel a movie trip to take my mother to go see Black Panther because I believed that, nearly one month in, performance would be starting to wane.

Narrator: "Actually, the theater was sold out.  Again."

I thought by now everyone knew that the Audience Score was manipulated as hell.

Batman v Superman had 120,000+ "audience reviews" before it even premiered, which then fueled all of these articles about why the audience and critical ratings were so divergent on it and other movies that had blatantly manipulated audience scores. Rotten Tomatoes either needs to fix their system or remove the audience scores entirely, because right now they are a worthless metric.

Pretty much this. I tend to save my actual movie theater visits for larger tent Pole movies or ones I am highly intrested in for instance the new Winston Churchill movie with Gary Oldman. Everything else, even movies I know I will probably enjoy get the streaming treatment in my basement.

"Streaming treatment in my basement" just happens to be my name for our Donald Trump themed improv group.

When I was 10 I talked my dad into taking me to see Dirty Harry's "Dead Pool" on opening night. The crowd was insane. People were jumping out of their seats.  In the final scene, some lady yelled "Do it, Clint!"  There's definitely a hardcore audience for this kind of flick.

There's a $5 theatre near where I live where I see a lot of movies.  It's older and could use new screens and seats and shows movies after they drop out of the first run screens, but really you can't beat The Movie Experience of going out and eating popcorn and seeing a movie on a big screen for $5.

I just took my mum to see Murder on the Orient Express there.  Fun movie, and I enjoyed it more than I would just sitting in her living room and watching it on a TV.

I have no idea how profitable it is, but it's pretty busy on evenings and weekends.

It is just as likely that the studios ran an astroturf campaign to prop up audience scores. BvS really is that bad.
