Awesome. He's usually a better watch at halftime than the actual game on TNT.

He's a guy that grows on you. At first you want to punch him (with 8 of your friends standing behind you) and then you can't live without him. I love the guy even when he's full of sh*t.

Pretty much this. Growing up in the 80s and 90s as a Lakers fan, you had to hate the guy. But now, I freakin' love the guy.
Even he realizes hosting SNL is a weird thing for him to be asked to do.

This.  The Hannitys and Ingrahams of the world can point out that they read more or research more political stuff, so their opinion counts more.  But they're also paid to present an entertaining view of politics, and do so by focusing on one brand.  Asking BronBron and Hannity questions about politics is like asking a homemaker and a Campbell's Soup executive questions about the best kinds of soup.  Campbell's soup executive may know more, in theory, but can you really trust their opinion?

rjakobi: He ain't no role model but he can speak his mind anytime and I'll listen.

Throughout his playing career a major theme was about whether or not athletes are role models and if they should be held accountable for their words and actions on a greater level because kids look up to them.
Barkley always said no child should ever do what he says just because he can dribble a basketball.

The issue at the time was probably about him throwing someone through a window.  The late 80's to early 90's also had a major recalibration in race relations, but I don't think he was speaking on those points when he made those statements.
And while racism was an issue then, the domestic federal political climate wasn't as unstable or combative as it is today.

No, not even close. That statement doesn't refer to the first amendment in any way. It's just people saying, "All you do is play with a ball, SHUT UP, your opinion is worthless"

Well it's saying: Because of your JOB you can't say anything.  Could you do that with say...an airline pilot? "Hey, because you fly, you can't say anything political. Shut up and fly the plane." Or anyone?

So yes, it's about silencing someone they disagree with and trying to demean their opinion simply because of their job.

No, it's an opinion. Everyone has a right to their opinion. Athletes have a right to express their opinion. And others have the right to say "shut up". No one has the power to actually silence anyone. so that's not happening.
Almost every single day on Fark I read people telling other people their opinion is idiotic, and to stop posting. It's just more opinions. It's not any suppression of rights.

And almost always black. Something tells me that if ultra-whitebreads like Drew Brees or Gronk said that maybe unarmed black people don't deserve to die, Fox would let it go. It's possible I'm wrong, but past events suggest I'm not.

Sure about that? In my experience, the people saying "shut up and dribble" (or variant) have a very loose grasp of the 1st amendment. When it Twitter deleting bots, it's a constitutional crisis. When it's the Dixie Chicks, they should be charged as subversives. Support our troops!
