Still a little too flashy for me, but yeah, of all the people you'd expect to ham it up it would be Jack Black.

That, I suspect, is the joke.

This.
He could play Orsen Wells one day, or Pavarotti the next.

I'm hoping he one day plays Enrico Pallazo

Remember when you were expecting a messed up version of "Let's get it on" in  High Fidelity?

Yeah, he did that to you again.

He certainly has no fear of attempting anything does he? He strikes me kind of like an early Tom Hanks (Bachelor Party) or Robin Williams (Mork). If given the opportunity for a serious role I think he could prove to be a great actor.

I'm kind of surprised he hasn't done a really serious role yet. If he has done one, I'm not aware of it.

He was lead singer ins band that released three albums. I assume that he could sing well enough to get through the song.
That said, I though he did a good job. He didn't try to go past his range, or showboat. That's where other singers get in trouble.

Not exactly serious, it's a dark comedy. But I thought Bernie was really good.

They train to be versatile performers, so it's not surprising. Impressive, absolutely, but also an expectation of the industry they're in.

Let this be a lesson. If Jack Black can make it through the national anthem without looking like a total douche, anyone should be able to.

He was in a dark comedy called Margot at the Wedding. Good cast, good acting, and I turned it off after half an hour because I couldn't stand any of the characters. Being a masochist, I watched the rest of it the next day. It was the most serious role I've seen Black play, and he did a fine job.

I really loved him in "The Holiday". There were flashes of Black (like in the video store) but for the most time he was very straightforward.

I love the way he sang the anthem. He told a story which is what the song is.

I avoided Robin Williams movies because of his "Robin Williams " shtick. Patch Adams, Good Morning Vietnam, etc.

By chance I saw the Night Listener (I think I'm the only one who saw it) and really liked his performance.

The movie works because it loosely follows the classic Hero's Journey.  People often give me a blank stare when I say this.

He did a good job by sticking to a simple formula: stick to the farking notes etc as written. If it's beyond your range or abilities, don't even try.

He certainly can sing, but many singers have botched the National Anthem.  He stayed in his range and gave a good solid performance.  There were a few minor pauses that slowed the pacing a bit more than I personally like, but his vocals nice. I would take him to perform at any sporting event anthem over the dregs we usually see.  And it was at a LA Sparks game to boot so you know only a handful saw it live.
