Every time someone supporting guns tries to use movies and video games as an excuse, my response is to suggest, "fine, lets just take guns out of movies and video games.  I'm ok with this."

After decades of glamorizing guns, Hollywood is finally going to step up and....wear a pin.

Well, thank goodness!

Now that the mouth-breathing ego factory that is Hollywood has thrown its full weight behind the issue everything will be solved in a jiffy!

Don't know about everyone else here, but until an issue has been interpreted for me by one of these bastions of rational thought it just doesn't make sense to me.

My thoughts exactly. I thought Harvey Weinstein was a pillar of the community until Emma Watson, Meryl Streep, etc. pointed out what a scumbag he was.

Reminds me of an observation Dennis Miller made about Barbara Streisand years ago after she got on her soapbox about something. (No memory at all of the particulars). He observed that other than telling the masses exactly what to do with their lives, she wanted ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with them.  He said don't believe me? Go up to the gate at her house & ring the button until you get someone on the horn & ask if you can camp out in her yard for a couple weeks. Just that. Not meet her or even come in her house, just camp in her yard & see how far that gets you

To be fair, it's unlikely I'd let you camp in my yard, either. Nor would Dennis Miller let you camp in his.

You fail at logic.
- Rich people have more and better sh*t to steal. That is why they are called "rich". If I were a thief I would not go to your neighborhood, I would go to theirs. Because they have that good sh*t and you don't.
- Rich people have money to pay ransom if kidnapped, something most people do not have, including most likely you. They also may have political or corporate power, something you also do not have. Their lives have monetary or political value to people that want to do them harm.
- And finally rich and powerful people are more famous. There's a notoriety that goes with doing one of them harm, and plenty of wackjobs that want some of that fame. Even if not successful. they will be famous in the attempt, and often that is just what they wanted.

Now in the grand scheme of things, a life is a life is a life, and no ones is worth more than any others except to the person that lives it. However the society that humans have built makes harming those who have fame and fortune and power different than harming those who have none. And there will be more people willing to harm those with fame and money and power. That's how it is. That's how it always has been. And that is why they have security.

One more thing... this is also true on a smaller scale. My brother worked for this states department of corrections for 25 years, then retired. He carries a piece most of the time when he leaves the house. He never liked guns, but became a range instructor as part of the job.

He would rather not have to carry his weapon but there are hundreds of people that he had to oversee in his career that are now free, and a high likelihood that one or more of them may want some payback. Two of his fellow former officers were attacked by former inmates last year, so that is a real and proven threat. He carries for a reason.
Point is that too many of the Rambo-wannabes imagine their ghosts to the point where they MUST carry wherever they go, whatever they do, because THE THREAT they imagine behind every bush and telephone pole and trashcan WILL ATTACK THEM WITHOUT WARNING.

So the people with the "private armed security" would probably like to go out just like everyone else, doing what everyone else does, and living like the normal people that aren't afraid of their own shadows do. That is not the world we live in. Now this is no defense of the rich and famous, but the reasoning and logic behind some of what they do. If there were fewer guns they would not need the security, and I'm sure most would welcome not having it. Ask any former president about that.

Why are all gun owners gun nuts? Are you that intellectually challenged to know that most gun owners are not NRA members and do not shoot people? Or is that the party line dog whistle for people that do things you don't like?

So much this. The NRA is only a tiny portion of gun owners and the majority of them would better be described as gun nerds. Gun nuts can't handle the level of pedantry needed to yammer about how assault weapons don't REALLY exist or to correct the colloquial term clip instead of magazine. Gun nerds better describes the type of people who memorize the numbers and acronyms needed to spend an afternoon on gun message boards. The elephant in the room of course is women. Gun girls are unicorns and gun nerds go crazy for them. Nuts always have tons of girls around.  Look at Charles Manson.

So I agree. The term gun nut needs to go away. It doesn't describe most gun owners and it doesn't describe the nerds of the NRA.

So one one hand people say video games, music and movies don't cause gun violence but on the other hand people are calling Hollywood hypocrites for advocating against guns because they make shoot em up movies? I think it is possible to separate the two, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. I guess Hollywood should stop making westerns and war movies to justify their positions?

That being said does anyone have a color/ pin chart that outlines which pins are METOO, Anti-Gun, Pro-Vegan, Anti-GMO, Pro-vaccination, Anti-Kale, Anti-Support Animal, Pro-Ecological Feminism , Anti-Ketchup on Hot Dogs and also which dress color means what?

2018-03-04 08:13:31 AM
This will do exactly 2 things:
1.  Amuse the liberals
2.  make the conservatives mock them and tell them to STFU and go back to being actors.

Here's the thing that people (conservatives) miss about actors and other entertainers.  They play a huge role in our lives.  They are everywhere all the time.  And people DO look up to them and respect them.  And therefore people DO listen when they have something to say.

So when they make a statement like this, people will remember.  Voters.  The conservatives to not outnumber the rest of the country, not matter what the GOP says.

2018-03-04 08:20:03 AM
Yeah, tell you what, Hollywood.  Do something about all that Weinstein and Polanski sexy crime baggage you've been carrying around for years and THEN it'll be fine for you to tackle the Next Big Threat To Society with your pins and such.

I still haven't forgiven you for tossing Oscars at that musical about Chicago.

The pins were made by a group called Everytown for Gun Safety and they're supposed to show that they're anti-gun-violence. Presumably the security have been trained on proper gun handling and they won't just be shooting people who give them side-eye.

I think that most people who are calling for better gun control are not calling for all guns to be eradicated but access restricted or regulated (better background checks), increased training to be required and types of weapons available to every day citizens to be restricted.
