Auston Matthews is still out with his shoulder thing and will not play. Cool to see the 8pm start though, I have a family dinner thing that was going to really mess with an earlier start.

Ok TF hockey types, it looks like if we want a place to play today it needs to be rubbed in assorted admins' faces.  Vote for the link iow...

Another outdoor game?  The gimmick wears thin when there's a dozen or so games like that every season...or so it seems.  One on New Year's Day is great to grab a bunch of casual viewers who don't want to watch football.  Make the ASG outdoors & 'maybe' one other real game but that's more than enough.

Ah well, even over hyped hockey is better than no hockey

I had absolutely no idea there was an outdoor game today, I was wondering why Hockey Night in Canada was starting an hour late.

This one should have 50mph winds at the tail end of that nasty storm for an interesting distraction if that wind is favouring one end look for the mid third period end switch. Also, if the Buds win, look for the crying about the conditions from the "home" side (that need the points more than the Leafs do for the playoffs).

Ok, let me revise my grumbling... if they can guarantee weather like this at an outdoor game, schedule all they can.  The laughs will be well worth it.

My bad, that wind was yesterday and it chased the teams indoors for practices. Current forecast says 11mph for puck drop and 42F ...resume grumbling. Gonna be a longish pregame thing too:
"And it should be a special evening on the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy, the first service academy to host an NHL game.
There will be recognition's of Navy personnel in the U.S. and Canada, flags unfurled across the ice during the anthems, performances by various military musical ensembles, and gold medal winners from the U.S. Olympic women's hockey team and the U.S. Olympic men's curling team.
It'll be picturesque, powerful and patriotic." (from the NHL article about the game)

In case you missed the news this week, Seattle might as well be awarded an expansion team right now. They got 25,000 season ticket deposits in one hour.

Unless Calgary moves due to their arena mess, the big loser in this (provided they don't move) is likely Arizona. They'll almost certainly be kicked out of the Pacific and lose the geographic rivalries with the California teams and Vegas.

So the important thing for Coyotes fans is that no matter how bad things seem, remember, they can always get worse?

I say Colorado shifts to Pac, Calgary and Edmonton go to Central to give Winnipeg company. AZ is in a bad position for too many reasons, but Central shift?

You put a question in my head: which is officially further east - Phoenix or Edmonton (the slightly further east of the Alberta teams). Edmonton is at 113 degrees west longitude. Phoenix? 112.

Geographically speaking, Arizona is the team that should move divisions. Historically speaking, Arizona is the team that should switch divisions. But I promise you that it will hurt the Coyotes to switch to the Central because outside of Chicago, there's not a big draw there for the non-Coyote fan in Arizona.

Is it just me or is the concept of 'sacrifice' being stretched reeeaaaalllllyyyyy thin here?

Oshie, Gardiner pay tribute to family's military sacrifice

'Service' maybe, but sacrifice?  Certainly if Gardiner's grandfather hadn't been AWOL & got blown up with everyone else it would & should be considered sacrifice, but he was AWOL & didn't (& probably had massive guilt for the rest of his life because of it).  Oshie's grandfathers being buddies on the same ship, only to have their kids meet (independently) years later & get married, is a cool story but hardly something that rises to 'sacrifice'.

See jingoism comment up above...

_/never really considered that wearing similar clothes as everyone around me & doing a job (sometimes full, sometimes part time) for 10ish years was sacrificing myself.
_/_/I guess the potential for something potentially happening was potentially there so a potential sacrifice might have been a lightning bolt out of the blue occurrence.  But the most dangerous part of the job was probably the commute.

For me it depends on what's being done.  The superficial crap that the DoD pays the NFL and the like to do, yeah, cut that shiat out.  Ask for a round of applause for a Medal of Honor recipient at the stadium?  I'm perfectly fine doing that.

Also, this Hockey Night in Canada opening from Remembrance Day 2013 is incredibly well done:

Man, I'm glad I'm not an Islanders fan. Just when it looks like they might finally gain some traction and start contending, they fall off the face of the earth, with the potential of Tavares leaving. There's that window closed and a build-time squandered.

And count me in as someone who mostly rolls their eyes at somber military appreciation gimmicks. It gets a bit much. Not to mention it makes me feel like a tool. Like people expect because I'm watching hockey I'm going to get a USA hard-on without ever considering why we're putting soldiers on a pedestal. And yeah, that makes me sound like I was rooting for CCCP in 1980, because it's a lot easier to whoop it up for some troops than it is to face increasing adventurism in pursuit of the non-stop wars we're engaged in. That's commie talk. Just wave your flag and show your appreciation for their service!
