Strange. I was just reading about this a few days ago. I was curious about the release date of Iron Sky 2 and did a google search. Seems that even though Iron Sky 2 hasn't had a wide release (planned for this fall), the company has just finished filming a Chinese themed Iron Sky 3. Apparently it's because China is such a big market now it's easier to get funding for a movie if it will appeal to Chinese audiences.

Duh, you watch one Chinese movie and 30 minutes later you want to watch another one.

The foreign markets are one big reason that movies are becoming dumber.  Splosions and canned dialogue play better universally than cutting satire or deep characters.

The Chinese theaters open up at 10 am daily and last show is at 10 pm, there's more than enough time to catch a flick.

^^ Or, in short.

A country with ~4.34 times the population of the US, has the biggest movie market of the world.

Lemme guess, India has the second.

Have you even been to a movie theatre recently?  Because we still don't.  In droves.

Is there some draw in a movie being nominally from America? I'd swear there used to be more movies coming from China.

I find it kinda annoying that some movies are rewritten to cater to the Chinese. Take for instance the Martian, where the Chinese space agency saves the day.

The Martian was a shiat movie, IMHO, yet I watched it, and it annoyed me.

Get used to it in real life. They're ascending to new global superpower status while the US tears itself apart because we all don't all look the same, think the same, and believe the same.

Well, you're complaining about a movie being rewritten to please the Chinese when it follows the subplot exactly as was written in the book. It was nothing like the weird Iron Man 3 subplot that was added for the Chinese market, but those scenes weren't even shown in the US.

I'm curious to see how well this does in china.  say what you want, last jedi flopped there because the black lead was paired with a Vietnamese girl.  i'm really dying to see how a mostly black cast film with an african centric look does there.

I also figure thats why it hasnt released there yet.

Well, one of the replies I got, kinda hinted that the Chinese thing was in the book, that the movie was based on, as well. I haven't read that book.

I've read that the Chinese thing was added to sell more tickets in China, but whoever wrote that might not have read the book either.

/shrug. Regardless if that scene is based on the book or not, I am sure box office movies are to an extend tailored to the the world largest market. Box office movies aren't about art after all, its about money,

I read an article claiming this was the case, and given that I haven't read the book I believed it to be the truth.

Now I know different. But yeah, even though it wasn't the case with the Martian then, it obviously does happen.

All this means is US audiences can't handle the truth.

FTA: China imposes a ban on foreign film imports every Spring Festival, the biggest holiday in China, and calling it the "domestic film protection period".

How does this not violate WTO rules?
