RJReves: Satire died

It's not dead, it's only mostly dead.

If anything, I'm really hoping for a renaissance of great satire.

This past election cycle and current administration is going to stretch the bounds of what satire can be.

That's not necessarily a bad thing.

At this point, it's hard for satirist because so many other facebook "pages" are pushing the same statements as actual facts

I'm at the point where I think Snopes should do a page for the major satire sites and issue a blanket:

"False"
"This story is satire, it comes from a well known satire site.  If you believed it was true even after seeing where it came from, you are a dumbass."

No kidding.

FTA: Factcheck.org, PolitiFact, and Snopes all have reputations for being biased in favor of liberals, so it's no wonder Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, a flaming liberal himself, is relying heavily on these organizations to be arbiters of truth in the Facebook universe. The company that utterly failed at keeping Russian bots from interfering in the 2016 election [Jaymark108: oh, you agree that happened now?!] now has apparently set its sights on conservative websites.

It's a good thing I know now that Factcheck.org, Politifact, and Snopes have reputations for being biased in favor of liberals.  I would hate to accidentally be persuaded by their evidence-based arguments.

2018-03-02 02:49:27 PM
Facebook claims that they're in the process of hiring thousands of fact-checkers along with "professional" fact-checking organizations that oh, by the way, happen to lean left.

Facts and reality don't really care for your political leanings.  If you have a problem with facts being reported as is, then the problem isn't the facts.  The problem is that you like to lie and can't deal with reality as it is.

The company that utterly failed at keeping Russian bots from interfering in the 2016 election now has apparently set its sights on conservative websites.

Considering conservative sites like to spread conspiracy theories and outright lies, I don't have a problem with this.  Welcome to 2018 - the push back against propaganda.

Give several examples of snopes being wrong.

2018-03-02 03:23:07 PM
So, let's see: a right-wing "news" site overreacts to Facebook overreacting to Snopes posting a trivial little notice about people overreacting to satire.

We can go further.

2018-03-02 03:25:04 PM
So, here is a question then... can satire be 'fake'?

Let's take 'A Modest Proposal'.  It suggests we eat babies, but it's satire and the point is that poverty is a real problem and a smart reader is going to take away from that that we shouldn't eat babies and that we need to do something about poverty.

Now imagine a white supremacist site runs 'satire'... the underlying 'truth' they are probably trying to advance is that black/jewish/other people are lazy or greedy or evil... in that case, it's still satire, but they are trading on false stereotypes.  Their goal is to get people to accept those stereotypes as true, but they'll yell that it's 'satire' and not true (as they wink and put air quotes around 'not true' as they look at their audience.)

So, I think CNN isn't the greatest news organization out there, but as 'spin' goes, when your other options are Fox or MSNBC, well, I'd argue they spin a little less... (although they focus on trivial stuff like spending a billion hours on missing airline coverage) but the narrative coming out of the White House is that they are fake news. Is satire that is meant to reinforce the opinion that they are 'spinning' everything then 'true', or can satire not be true?

I think I'd argue that 'A Modest Proposal' was honest satire, but that it's possible to have dishonest satire as well.  I'd argue in that case, if FB wants to present honest news then they need to act as an editorial board for at least the commercial content on their site.  (That is, if that is what they want to do.)  In that case, if that's their goal, then I'd say they were correct to flag this.

Begoggle: So Snopes accurately said a satire site is not truth?

Jesus, let me explain this, because apparently you don't logic so well...

This satire site has NEVER pretended to be anything else, they are a satire site. Yet they are being threatened with losing their FB page because some dipshiat thinks that they are pushing the Russian Bot style of "fake news". It would be like The Onion getting blacklisted on Google(Or losing their FB page) because their shiat is not real.

Snopes should never have touched this. The most they should have done is had a page that said "This is a satire site, and as such, it does not fall under "fact checking" guidelines".

FB shouldn't be threatening to kick off a satire site because they aren't telling the truth in their satire.

Lastly, this isn't that hard to figure out, I shouldn't have to hold your hand.

Satire is fiction, period. It is NOT "intended to deceive". It's not "misinformation".

sat·ire

noun
the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.
