No thanks.  I don't enjoy watching paint dry.

So instead of losing by 60 they lost by 13.

So, you're not letting your girls have fun. You're not letting your girls learn how to compete at the sport. You're not letting the girls develop their skills and get better. You're not letting them get some exercise.

What the hell is the point?

You might think it'd be winning, but no.  You're teaching them to be assholes.

I had a new coach my senior year of basketball who employed this strategy...

one team just let us hold the ball.

at the end of the first quarter it was 3-1;  half time 8-9; I think we won 27-25.  Got booed by our own fans in our home gym.   I almost quit and walked off the floor.  only reason I didn't was so I could play in the county All-Star game at the end of the season (best chance to be seen by a scout).  Hard to impress college teams when you only have 15 points, 12 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks a game...since they don't realize that was 90% of all the possible events happening (total of 15 rebounds for the whole game, I had 12, idea)

what made it worse?  the previous three years we ran run-and-gun averaging close to 90 points a game; set the state record for most number of threes in a game twice; and one guy set the individual record for a single game with 9.

so I went from having fun to standing with the ball at half-court for minutes at a time.

I don't consider that strategy "playing basketball"

still regret not telling the team to ignore the coach and just run last years offense.

four-corners-keep-away is fine for the end of the game where you have a lead and just want to run the remaining time off the clock; but not when the time remaining is 60 minutes.

When I was in high school way back in 1965, our team was undefeated and #1 in the state. During one game the opposing team held the ball as much as they could. The score at the end of the first quarter was 7 - 7. The final score was 73 - 37, that strategy didn't work. The team went on to be state champions with a 26 -0 record.

Chuck Daly and the Pistons

They were so mad when the Bulls swept them in 91 in the ECF that Zeke, Laimbeer, and Agguire walked off the court before game 4 even officially ended

Defender should just walk up and initiate a 5 count.

When you're up on a team that just wants to stand there... why, let 'em stand there, obviously the other coach said F it let 'em do it

I've never loathed and respected a team in equal measures the way that I did those Pistons teams.  They were dirty as hell and would beat the shiat out of you in the lane, but I had to respect how blatant they were about it.

Morons , first off that a horrible strategy , secondly it might work better if you had the lead when you tried it.

I think what you do is have your players sit down on the court. Tempt them to make a basket. Let them make the basket. Then inbound the ball and hold it for the rest of the game.

/assuming, like this, that you're already winning

The funniest part of the whole thing is these folks were in the Quarterfinals of the their section in state playoffs.

There have to be a LOT of really bad teams for that to happen

I don't why this would be strange. It's literally why the shot clock exists in the first place. In the pre-shot clock era, there were NBA games where the winning team didn't break 20.

Here's an article about that 4-2 high school game TFA references, with surprising compelling video goodness.

Apparently most games in the era were 70-80 points per team when I checked basketball-reference.com for a box score.
