Yeah, Bob Knight's an asshole; yet he kept Indiana and Texas Tech away from the scandals that engulfed Men's CBB because he was such an asshole.

CSB:

Knight's last game with Indiana was during the 2000 tournament...against my alma mater....we won 77-57.  I was in school at the time, and you could hear people cheering all over campus.

/Good times.
//I need to recall memories like that on occasion, because our basketball team has SUCKED for a long time.

He also kept them from the second round of postseason play rather regularly.

Knight was many despicable things, but I don't think a cheater was one of them.

I can see Knight thinking that cheating was beneath him...

/still can't stand the guy

Yeah, and of course the only program caught cheating will be Arizona.

I was hoping for a clean sweep and some SMU Tiny Fighting Boys to find a place in  college sports again.

It all comes down to gambling and that means illegal money and corruption. Throughout college basketball and football.

attempted CSB:  in late 2000, just a few weeks/months after Indiana fired him, I attended Arizona State's holiday men's BB tournament;  ASU had a decent program at the time and they;d invite 3 scrub teams to rack up cheap NCAA wins and win their own tourney.

So.  Parents and I walk in, ASU vs, whatever, Chaminade, Cal Poly, Northwestern Southeast North Iowa, whatever.  20 minutes before the game , seats are empty, teams doing drills.  I see a older white haired guy and a woman sitting in the cheap seats.  Bobby Knight.  the entire section was just him and his wife.  I turn to my dad and go, "hey!  be cool, but...that's Bobby Knight!"  Dad looks, "holy crap!  it really is him!"

we were 20-30 feet away and just standing there.  over the next 5-10 minutes, folks started  filling in, and then one person, then 2,then 5, then 10, rushed over to meet him, get an autograph.  Pre-cell phone eta, some folks had cameras and asked for pics.  He obliged but you could tell he had enough.  I didn't notice him talk to anybody or smile for pics;  just stone faced.  as a small crowd had formed around him, you could tell he was about to snap, and with a hand gesture he called security over and was duly escorted away to a more private seating area.  he was visibly upset, that I remember.

folks and I turn away to find our seats...and from one of the main seating entrances, we literally almost bump into....Dickie V.  "Holy crap!  Dick!  Can I get your autograph!" "sure, baby!  Tempe AZ, can't beat the weather!  Coach ___ has something special here!  March Madness around the corner, it;s awesome baby!"

so yeah.  the time I saw Bobby Knight slowly boil over - just after his firing - and then ran into Dickie V.

On the one hand, Knight ran a clean program. Everyone went to class, everyone got the grades, those who could stand him for 4 years graduated. On the other hand he's a megalomaniac, and being at a place like IU, where basketball is close to religion, was like throwing gasoline on a fire. At his height he was more powerful than the president of the university.

He never got over believing he was above reproach. That and his bombastic nature made being a basketball coach the only thing he's qualified for. As a result he's a huge dick.

You do realize that "CSB" is sometimes used sarcastically to post an average story, right?

What's your deal?

I don't remember the details but it was some sort of mandatory for coaches NCAA ethics conference. Bobby Knight refused to go and some people weren't too happy about it and he got fined whatever. I'm paraphrasing John Thompson here but Thompson said something like "If there is one person who doesn't need to be there it is Coach Knight."

A lot of things could be said about Knight but nobody even whispered anything about cheating, ever. Maybe I'm wrong on that and maybe one person did so Knight killed them which meant that nobody else even considered it afterwards.

Almost all of his former players will stridently defend his methods while outsiders find them repugnant. He is also a guy with a well documented history of going out of his way to be a complete asshole to people in his personal life, there has been some really unnecessary stuff over the years and a lot of it never seemed to gain all that much traction nationally.

I don't know if he still does color (third man in the "booth?") but I really enjoyed his insights for games. Much the same way that I liked Urban Meyer being in the booth, Knight broke a lot of things down in explaining what was going on and the reason for it in a way that helped those at home see things from a different perspective.

Anyways, I think I'll always find Knight to be a fascinating individual if for no other reasons than he is smart as hell and he seems to be one of the few people on the planet that truly does not care what your opinion of him is even if it is a positive one.

It is what I'm told I wanted to see when I was just a wee one, apparently I always wanted to go see "backetball practice" and "moshing band practice."

Rwa2play: Yeah, Bob Knight's an asshole; yet ....

This has to be one of the most repeated phrases in college basketball, because it was the first thing I said in my head when I read the headline.

One and done.
NCAA players not compensated.
NBA throwing games for higher lottery picks.

All related.

Make the NBA and all pro sports turn their D-leagues into a second tier and institute promotion and relegation.

See how quickly the problems will be solved as basement dwellers are forced to compete.

I don't say this in a pejorative way at all, but it makes sense that a Woody Hayes fan has some affinity for Bobby Knight

Start the countdown until his cheating is exposed.

It always happens when people make statements like this
