Uber should allow drivers to refuse long distance trips like this.  If he did enter it in the app, the driver should have never been dispatched.

If I wanted a long distance trip like this, I would call for a short trip across town, and after determining that the Uber driver was decent, I'd ask about a long trip "under the table" in cash.  no money to Uber, no record, no taxes.

And no insurance coverage for the driver. GFY.

The app warns you it's a long ride. An once you accept, you can call the rider, ask  HOW long, and cancel if it's not for you.

Or they should just have an "Are you sure? Cross your heart and hope to die, pinky-swear sure?" function. It can't possibly be hard to implement. Just have some distance limit like 100 miles as a default and then maybe user-entered, daily-use limits, that require extra confirmation steps and an override password. A drunk who is committed to take a 1,600 mile trip still will, but at least the drunk slob who forgets where he is and enters a stupid destination will get a few warnings/reminders that might dissuade him.

Quite the assumption there by the author to say "just about everyone".

The last time I took a Greyhound I sat next to a pretty cute Scandinavian chick on her way back to South Florida after spending a little time at Disney.  So I can't confirm or deny the smell of whale blubber, or passengers on PCP.  However, YMMV.

New Jersey is perfectly fine so long as you stay out of the Newark area (except the airport.  Fly out of Newark if ever possible, its easier than philly or any NYC airport).
West Virginia is one of the most beautiful states i've had the privilege of visiting.

Back to topic...
I bet the uber driver jumped at the chance to earn $1600 on a trip to NJ.  That said it was a bit unethical to make said trip.  Guy was too drunk to make decent decisions and such a long distance trip should be a red flag in Uber's system where you have to enter a password or something to activate it.

About the tolls: the uber driver could have gotten money out for those.
$20 gets you to NJ from south of I95.  From the map in TFA they took 76 so unless you hit some weird tolls before MD you get:
- $4 for the baltimore tunnel (assuming the app took him that way),
- $4 for the Susquehana northbound crossing (which is a total ripoff imo)
- $4 for the privilege of entering Delaware on I95 (which you can avoid if you get off the exit right before it and go through the town)
- $4 for the delaware river crossing

You'd need a bit more for the turnpike but you can get money out at the rest stops.  EZ pass is a must if you're going to uber or lyft as direction apps like to pay off toll roads.

Lyft actually does. If a driver sees a request flagged as a long trip, the driver can decline the request and won't hurt his acceptance rating.

For me as a driver, it would be tough for me to refuse. As far as info entered in wrong, i simply verify with the passenger the destination that pops up, before I leave and before HE passes out. If all is legit, it's off to the races.

Well the story behind that picture, is that the Prince of Wales Trophy is being awarded in 2012 to the New Jersey Devils after defeating the NY Rangers in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals (famous words from Doc, "THEY SCORE! Henrique! It's OVER!"). So that Rangers fan is supposed to be there (as opposed to the other times they show up to the Prudential Center in a Rags' jersey when the Devils are playing and the Rangers aren't the opposition team on the ice! Turns out tickets to Prudential Center are cheaper than tickets to MSG for Rags fans.) as well as the other one near the glass at the lower left corner.
