Relative to the batshiattery RWW usually covers this is pretty mild by comparison. Still stupid, though.

And is he suggesting Jesus was black? Cuz I'm down with that.

Everything is Jesus. You don't need any entertainment, information, or culture other than what is in The Bible. Because everything else is just a bad imitation. Greatest Story Ever Told. THE GREATEST!

Except for the pastor. God wants him to have a 60" 4k and an ESPN subscription so that he can study sin, and use his knowledge to protect his flock. Donate Today!

I've had sex with Jesus. He was a guy from Valparaíso, Chile.

IMHO:

At some point more people are going to start to appreciate this movie for what it was.

Black Panther was ultimately about conflicts within the Black Power movement concerning the nature of the struggle that should take place against the global hegemony represented by European and American culture, predominantly in the guise of white people and their oppression of non-white races.

The Black Panther Party was founded in Oakland, so it isn't a coincidence that some of the most important and formative moments take place there, particularly those concerning the 'birth' of Killmonger, who advocates a more radical ideology. Oakland was also one of the epicenters of the crack epidemic, which makes it even more appropriate as a location to revisit concerning the well-being (or lack thereof) of African Americans circa 1992.

T'Challa and N'Jadaka are both correct in their own ways, and the title of the movie, "Black Panther", might refer to either of them, or even both. One represents pacifism (not engaging with the rest of the world), the other armed struggle (arming African Americans was an early primary goal for the Black Panther Party, to the extent that white conservatives limited open carry in California). In the end T'Challa decides to forge a new path, a synthesis of these competing ideologies. When N'Jadaka asks to be buried at sea like his ancestors the most important meaning is that one of his parents was from Wakanda ('pure' and uncorrupted) and the other was from America (a descendant of slaves, people who had struggled under the adversity of a corrupt and terrible system).

The ultimate message is that Black people have a hell of a lot to give the world (and they've already given more than we realize), and maybe we should shut up and listen for a change. That's what the mid-credits scene at the UN was about.

/white guy
//it's kind of ironic that the majority of the dialogue even within Wakanda had to be in English

Christians trying to jump on the pop culture bandwagon of the day to get kids interested in Jesus is nothing new. I'm sure in the 90s there was a pastor that said "My Power Ranger is Jesus".

But this...

"I believe that many are reaching out because there's this secularized need for us to feel like those who have been told that they were less than ... [that they] can really be powerful people,"

A conservative activist claiming that "not being racist" comes from secularism?

Yes, a movie about a fictional pan-African nation untouched by European colonialism needs to be used to preach the religion that Europeans really used to subjugate and colonize Africa.

I would interpret that as a fairly standard "Jesus satisfies our need for [whatever], and people who don't know Jesus still need that but seek it elsewhere." And the corollary that if people are buying a message from Marvel, maybe they're also willing to listen to how your religion imparts that message.

I'm not going to lie, I ran across a comparison between this film and the MLK vs Malcom X debates, and it was impressive as hell.

The end result of Black Panther, of course, was that neither extreme or isolationism and non-violence, nor what amounted to a global racial subjugation campaign, was the correct answer.  Instead it was along the lines of, "Go fight for your principles, rationally at first, be willing to use force if rationality is rejected, and don't hide yourself away."  That's a laudable position to stake out, and it's directly applicable to a position I'm coming more and more around to IRL: that politically-motivated violence may be necessary when discussion or compromise is impossible andwhen living with the status quo is unacceptable.

Of course they don't stop.  They can't.

Christianity is a religion designed to keep slaves happy in their subjugation and oppression.

When its adherents are not members of a slave class, they must constantly seek out persecution else the entire belief system fall apart.

Black preacher. Some of the black congregations never doubted Jesus' blackness.

Of course, he probably wasn't black, either. He was Middle Eastern Jewish. He was probably closer to olive-skinned if he existed at all and isn't just an amalgam of various "prophets" of that era.

Does the concept of rich, powerful, intelligent dark-skinned people really terrify conservatives this much? I've seen a near-constant stream of bullshiat related to this movie, and it's getting more & more deranged every damned day.

Yeah, but we saw a lot of bullshiat related to Clinton, too - it was a bit easier to roll that into "Generalized Republican Derangement." This bizarre derangement associated with the movie, though, can't be waved away as political bullshiat quite so easily on my part - I had at least hoped that we weren't this goddamned racist, but, I was wrong.

I'm pretty sure there is at least one shot of someone (T'Challa himself IIRC) in cruciform pose in Black Panther (at a Meaningful Moment). So deep is Jesus embedded in American art that you can't even make a movie about a culture untouched by Christendom without Christian imagery all up in it.

I'm politically conservative, and I definitely enjoyed Black Panther.  In fact, I want to see it again....the showing I went to was regular 3D and not IMAX 3D.

It's used for people who take political correctness to insane levels, and get offended over EVERYTHING.
