Lets ban words, as those are more dangerous than guns.

The generation that grew up doing Duck and Cover nuclear bomb drills thought those were scary too. And in a shift from their parents, they were then generally against the nuclear weapons and this helped lead to a number of treaties that greatly reduced the risk of nuclear wars.

We're seeing what happens when a group of kids grew up doing active shooter drills and having to think, regularly, about the prospects of some gun zealot with an assault rifle running amok in their schools. What happens is that they learn about shooters, and the weapons they use, and the laws that do and don't regulate who can buy these guns, and why the laws are the way they are. And these kids aren't afraid to tell us what they think of the laws that have let this happen, and happen again, and again, and again.

Having witnessed what happened to those kids who grew up with "Active Shooter Drills", so named, I'm impressed with how they've responded to that fear, with how they've emerged well educated, with factually informed opinions, and a strong desire to fix things. Maybe scary names for scary things are better than euphemisms that make old people feel more comfortable, comfortable enough to ignore or deny the reality.

How about not needing to have these in the first place by doing something to prevent this kind of violence from happening, rather than focus on the nomenclature? You know... go to the root of the problem, not the symptom?

This. I grew up right outside DC at the end of the Cold War. When I was in elementary school in the 80s we had nuclear attack drills. Air raid sirens would go off without warning and we would have to file out of class then line up in front of the school grouped by what bus we rode while the teachers turned on the news to see if we were, in fact, all going to die. You could see that look of fear on the teachers faces every time it happened. We can't have another generation go through something like that and the worst part is we don't have too. We had no choice but to do it back then but we're choosing to let this happen now.

There are different types of "safety drills" and the procedures are not the same. I grew up with fire and later on, earthquake drills. Today's kids get to add lockdown and active shooter drills to their repertoire.

/Stoner kid in my 10th grade English class managed to get himself wedged under his desk during an earthquake drill. His friends had to lift it off of him.

Wait, why? Are guns scary or something? I have been assured that the increased presence of firearms in any given situation always results in increased safety.

Wow fark him.  I work in schools (no kicks are gotten) and have been through many of these drills.  They are unnerving as all fark, and it's not because of the name.

IT'S BECAUSE WE'RE DRILLING ON WHAT TO DO IF SOMEONE ATTACKS OUR SCHOOL WITH A WEAPON OF WAR

my kiddo has had these drills since he was 5
i don't know how to really explain it to him other than 'bad people'  & when he says "ya, we are supposed to hide & be quiet"  i almost throw up & weep at the same time - it's kind of an interesting farked up mix of emotion

also i don't let him play with anything resembling a realistic toy gun - but that's more of a 'cops are loose cannons & i'm not sure how to explain that yet either'  thing

this parenting thing is tough yo

I can only imagine what would have happened if they found out the bombs really were dropping.

Football coach walks up in front of the students.
"Well, kids it seems like the apocalypse is here.  We've all got approximately 15 minutes until doomsday.  Myself?  I'm going to and ask the French teacher Madame Antoinette if she'd like to ride out the end of the world in style with me on the couch in the teacher's lounge.

If any of you feel likewise about your fellow classmates, go right ahead.  It's too late to teach you about condoms and, frankly, any survivors will probably need to get started with repopulating the wasteland as soon as possible anyway.

Madame, un momento s'il vous plaît?"

Ah the old "violent movies and video games" scapegoat. That's what causes most car accidents, right? These damn plumbers and apes in go-karts leaving banana peels all over the highway? I'm not even going to get into the Chitauri Invasion of NYC 2012 out of the respect of all the lives lost.

The worst thing a movie is to blame for in all this is that someone can go see a film where John Rambo goes on a murder spree, then go out into the real world and buy the AR-15 he uses in the film.

If the name "Active Shooter Drill" might scare kids, imagine what an actual active shooter might do.  Jesus Christ, the disconnect.  This is too much, even for Orange Foolius.  Just shut up, you sack of rancid whale shiat.

fark that, I had one the morning of the shooting. Made them hide behind lab stations etc etc, kids were annoyed. The next day they all came back and talked about how they understood why I made them go to the places they did. These are highschoolers, mostly from El Salvador and they're more freaked about this than the MS13 member hiding with them. So yea, keep the name what it is, don't water it down.

Had a faculty meeting about how we will handle walk outs as well.

How about not having a society in which kindergartners have drills to prepare for a random shooting?

Earthquake? Tornado? Fire? Those things occur everywhere in the world and are dangers we should all be prepared to navigate.

The US, however, is unique in the world for people showing up in schools, with weapons of war, intent on shooting as many people as possible.

Maybe, just maybe, we should address the root sources of this defect at the code level, rather than just adjusting the user interface.
