The new show kind of sucks even though I've only seen four or five episodes. I kept trying to give it a chance but it just doesn't work very well.

And the slayers interrupting the wedding scene on the 2600 were a stabby Berzerk or Space Invaders clone.

The boulders bit in the arcade sucked. Actually, the arcade game did suck. It made the 2600 version look good and that was meh at best. I just like the da-da-da-dum sound when you pick up a glaive or soldier.

I think it suffers from the issue that Ghostbusters 2016 suffers from where they thought that if no one is talking then no one is laughing as some sections are just layered with riffs from all three of them in rapid succession. Also the visual gags and musical numbers during the theater segments often just fell flat for me.

...uh, he gets the glaive like 5% into the story, before he meet anyone besides the old man.  It's not terribly important except to look cool.  Most of the journey is figuring out where the castle will appear each day, and getting there before it moves again.

And from the beginning, the prophecy is that their union is what wins, not the glaive.  It's pretty standard fantasy trope stuff.

I've been hoping Rifftrax would take another shot at Space Mutiny.  It's a damn crime that they got through the entire MST3k episode without realizing all the exterior footage was BSG.

Now I just need them to announce a riff of Robot Jox.

The only thing that bugs me about the annual Rifftrax Live Kickstarter is that it seems a bit wrong to crowdfund money for the event, and then still have to pay $15 or whatever for an actual ticket to the shows.  Are the ticket sales so dismal each year that they have to subsidize it with Kickstarter money?  Fathom manages to host a ton of events that don't have associated Kickstarters and I can't believe that those other events draw in much more in ticket sales than Rifftrax does.

Fortunately the rewards (especially the inevitable stretch rewards), make it worth chipping in a few bucks usually.

NeoCortex42: The only thing that bugs me about the annual Rifftrax Live Kickstarter is that it seems a bit wrong to crowdfund money for the event, and then still have to pay $15 or whatever for an actual ticket to the shows.

They've actually talked about this before. Because of the way that Fathom Events works, they can't realistically offer passes to the shows as backer rewards. Too many individual chains and theaters would need to be brought on board and convinced to honor those passes, and that would be prohibitively difficult/expensive.

NeoCortex42: Are the ticket sales so dismal each year that they have to subsidize it with Kickstarter money?  Fathom manages to host a ton of events that don't have associated Kickstarters and I can't believe that those other events draw in much more in ticket sales than Rifftrax does.

The problem is that most other Fathom Events don't require them to go out and license the movie rights in the way RiffTrax has to. Either they organization planning the event has enough money to secure the necessary licenses beforehand, or they are the original license holder to begin with. Rifftrax needs to get the rights and pay for the event itself. They don't strictly need to do crowdfunding for that, so long as they stick with low-budget and/or little known movies, but so long as they're playing with big names like Sony (who I believe still holds the distribution rights to Krull via Columbia Pictures), they can't do it on the back of ticket sales alone.

The new show was in a tough spot. If they slavishly follow the standards of the original series, us 40-50 year old fans will have a great time, but that isn't necessarily going to bring in a new fan base. Some parts didn't work for me, like the musical numbers in every episode. Maybe if they only did a couple of them in the series it would have been better. I enjoyed the series overall and I want to see what they do if there is another season.

BalugaJoe: I saw Five Doctors. It was hillarious.

I saw it at the Belcourt when they were doing it, and yet, the wife and I got bored of the movie about halfway through. The jokes were great, though.

But that's an anomaly. We've seen plenty of the live shows, and I always go to see if this time I can finally meet Mike. Plus, when they did Time Chasers live a couple of years ago, they had the cast of Time Chasers singing posters and taking photos, and they all did it for free. They really enjoyed just being there meeting fans. I'm hoping maybe something like that happens for Space Mutiny.

...I'm a big enough fan of both MST3K and Rifftrax that kicking in a few bucks every now and then doesn't bother me.  The folks who run both outfits, I think, work harder than anybody else I can think of to give their fans what they want and treat them as a valued partner - I get that they can't get a break on the ticket prices, but it's worth it to get a couple hours of comedy that can't be matched anywhere else.

Either that or Outlaw or Gor. I have a few friends that were huge City Slickers fans and seeing Jack Palance in action was a treat for them.

I just love Time Chasers. It's like the Black Lab of movies. It's dumb, knocks things over and breaks them, but it's just sooooo happy that you're watching it. And I love how perplexed the cast is at the way people love it as a cult classic, especially the guy who played JK Robertson, who in interviews is the ultimate backwoods Yankee from Vermont. Like if you turned maple syrup into a person, wrapped it in flannel, it'd be that dude.
