Why such harsh treatment for Louisville?  It's not like Pitino allowed an assistant to pork young boys in the showers.

This is kind of a big deal. People have lost tournament wins before,  all the way up to runners up. But this is the first title to be vacated. Kinda hard to ignore the problems going around the NCAA now.

They still get to keep all the unreported income, right?

Didn't Notre Dame football have a few seasons wiped off the books, including a year they played for that championship?

Yeah, because vacating the title means that nobody knows who won that year anymore.

The whole idea of "vacating" something in the past is stupid. Fine them to death. Punish their future. But they can't rewrite history.

The NCAA doesn't award a D1 football title but the BCS vacated USC's 2004 title because of NCAA rules violations

Oh I agree. And it's not like vacating is always for a good reason; there was that guy in the 70s for Nova that didn't expect to get past the sweet 16 and ended up in the final 4....

So Michigan will now be listed as the winner of the 2013 championship, right?  Right?!

/I didn't think so.

Yeah, do what they do in European soccer, knock them down a division or two and take away their TV money.

There was no unreported income. The one player who was still in school when this came to light was reinstated without having to sit out a single game. The players get to keep the memory of the lap dances they received, though, without paying any tips.

I know this investigation had been going on for a while before the Brian Bowen thing broke it open, but the funny thing to me is how EVERYONE in college knew that kid was dirty and it was Pitino who said "fark it...i'll sign a kid I never recruited and not ask any questions about how or why he came into my program." And then actually thought he'd be able to play dumb when his program got busted for paying the kid 100 grand to play there.

Um, so are you if you think there was. Perhaps you are thinking of the newer FBI scandal that includes Louisville, Arizona, Miami, Auburn, and reportedly might cover another 50 teams. That's the story where there was a report of $100,000 promised to a player who never suited up for Louisville and is sitting on the bench at South Carolina right now.

Wrong investigation. You are correct that Pitino should have looked deeper into why a player fell into his lap at the last minute, but you are wrong that everyone knew he was dirty. Even at the end he had offers from UCLA, Arizona, Michigan State and others, and certainly could have had more if other teams hadn't filled out their rosters by the spring/summer.

The last three final fours Michigan has been in have all been tainted.

It isn't rewriting history. It's taking back the honor.

So they take back the honor. Who won the tournament that year?

Yep, still Louisville.

Everybody knows that John Calipari is dirty and Coach K is clean. Except that Duke had a player who did the exact thing that Marcus Camby did and nothing was done about it.

UNC had a 20 year academic scandal and the NCAA did nothing.

So, yeah, college athletics has more than a bit of comic sordidness about it. And it's not just bent coaches. I suspect that the NCAA is just as bad as the IOC and FIFA. Apparently (if rumors are true) the shoe scandal will hit 50 teams. Around 20% of Div I.

They need to floss to get rid of the plaque. The banners came down 3 hours after the announcement. Whether they can keep them is between them and the NCAA.

People seem to be confusing investigations here. Boy does that say something about NCAA athletics.

Do they get into the record books with the longest losing streak in history?  (or is that not the longest?)
