TWO beers a day and a few excess pounds are the secret to living longer, scientists say.
The glasses of beer, or wine, cut the risk of dying young by a fifth.
And carrying a few excess pounds in later life makes an early death 3 per cent less likely.
A daily routine that includes two cups of coffee daily and 15 minutes of exercise also cut premature deaths by 10 and 11 per cent respectively.

Congratulations Drew. We knew you could do it.

If drinking two beers a day cuts your risk of dying young by a fifth, how much better is it to drink a fifth?

Then they aren't excess pounds, they are the correct weight.

Adjust the BMI recommendations for old folks a little.

"It is best to gain between five and 10 pounds per decade. "

Ok, so from 20 to 70, you should gain 25 to 50 pounds? No thanks.

Gaining 50 pounds by 70 is not a good idea. You need your knees and back to be healthy then. Quality of life does matter.

/Don't believe anyone about more weight == longer life
//Still drink on special occasions and weekends

That extra couple pounds can come in handy, believe it or not.  A couple years ago I landed in the hospital on a Saturday (My suggestion would be that unless you're bleeding out, having a heart attack, or a stroke, don't go to a hospital on the weekend.  Nothing gets done).  They put me on "bowel rest" which is hospital shorthand for "starve the motherfarker".  I'm 6'3 and I went from 235lbs to 205lbs by the time I got out of that torture chamber.  I looked like I was walking off the Bataan Death March by the time I left the hospital, and they never figured out what was wrong with me.  Took me almost 2 years to gain the weight back.  I can remember shivering my aers off that winter because I was skinny.

BTW, I think the BMI is overly simplistic.  I could be a mountain of muscle, or a mountain of fat, and my BMI would be the same.  Mine is a 29.4.

I watched my parents wither away from cancer in their 50's, going from slightly overweight to looking like death on a Trisket.  I'll keep the extra LB's...

Body fat contains about 3500 calories* per pound. For you to have lost 30 pounds of body fat you would have to burn off 105,000 calories*. I find it hard to believe you could have done that over weekend in a hospital bed.

*kilocalories, but whatevs.

The false corelation fallacy is very strong with these "scientists". Two hours a week of non-sport hobbies reduces chance of dying 21 percent.  Porn addicts all live to 90.

That Guy What Stole the Bacon: [Youtube 5Ua-WVg1SsA image 480x270][Youtube-video https://www.youtube.com/embed/5Ua-WVg1SsA]

I think you should eat what your ancestors ate, adjusted to your lifestyle, which may be a few thousand Calories short of what your had working ancestors needed. Not your primitive cave-man ancestors, but sensible bourgeois or peasant ancestors. Let's say around 1600 or 1700, maybe even 1800 in a pinch. Good old school cookery. Make mine French or British.

Black Africans should eat more greens and root vegetables--soul food in other words. Europeans can eat lots of cheese and black or brown bread. The Chinese obviously will eat anything in sight on a bowl of rice, and the Japanese can stick to sea food.

The main rule is the old English proverb "A touch of what you fancy does you good." Go ahead, have a drink after work, a few ounces of chocolate a day, and a wee splurge or fast once in a while, perhaps once a week even.

I always say that variety is the price of life, not just the spice of life, so no Macrobiotics, fad diets or excess of any kind.

Oh, and eat a lot of spice if you like. If you like and can eat a vindaloo without an emergency trip to the hospital or out house, it is probably good for you.

My sweet kindly old Grandmother nearly made it to ninety. Sadly, lurid dime novels were not enough.

She was a very placid person on the whole, like her late Father's cows. He used the same list to name his children as his cattle, I suspect. All the daughters had good old-fashioned cow names. The boys had dog names. I think peace of mind and a touch of faith or fatalism explains the many centenarians in remote rural areas. Their lifestyle per se is hard, perhaps, but their worries are close to home and relatively few. They sleep when they sleep, eat when it is eating time, and they live in the place where they are, not in some sort of screen.

Moderate alcohol intake is good for you, lowers blood pressure etc.

Alcohol also has significant negative health effects that scale up with dosage.

There's a word for a substance that's beneficial or neutral at certain doses but harmful or even deadly at other doses.  That word is "everything".  Literally every single chemical substance that does, has, will, can, or physically could exist.  The phrase "the poison is in the dose" is literally the first scientific statement ever made by recorded western science, and it predates the actual word "science".

Stop spamming us with articles telling us this is a new and shocking discovery every ten farking seconds.
